She studied a little of everything at first, including German literature, musicology, and English, before changing direction and completing a degree in business education and communication psychology. Writing was not her neat, carefully planned career move.

After several jobs, Gier started writing women's novels in 1995 and soon became a freelance writer. Her first novel, Men and Other Disasters, appeared in 1996 and was later adapted for film. From the start, she showed a feel for brisk plots, funny dialogue, and heroines whose lives are always one bad decision away from getting much more complicated.

That early adult fiction still matters if you want the full picture. That trilogy, followed by Sapphire Blue and Emerald Green, throws an ordinary London teenager into a secret world of time travel, prophecies, and family lies. Readers tend to love the mix of romance, mystery, and comedy. The books have a lot going on, but they never feel heavy. Gier keeps the story moving with jokes, awkward moments, and a heroine who sounds like a real teen even when history keeps dropping on her head.

She took a different route into fantasy with Dream a Little Dream and its sequels, where Liv Silver discovers that dreams are not private, and definitely not safe. Those books lean more into paranormal mystery, but they carry the same Gier strengths: quick dialogue, crushes, suspense, and girls who keep asking questions when everyone around them would rather they stop. Later, A Castle in the Clouds showed how well she can work without a big fantasy framework at all, building danger, romance, and comic tension inside an old Swiss hotel during the holiday season.
