Author bio

Kerry Wilkinson grew up in Somerset, was born in Bath, and went to school in Frome before studying journalism at the University of Central Lancashire. That mix, small-town roots and newsroom training, shows up all through his fiction. Even when his books move fast, they tend to notice the little social details that make places feel lived in.

He did not come into publishing through the tidy, traditional route. While working as a journalist, he wrote Locked In largely to prove to himself that he could finish a novel. After a couple of early agent rejections, he stopped waiting around, put the book out himself, and let readers decide.

They decided quickly.

Locked In took off as an ebook hit in the UK, and Vigilante and The Woman in Black followed close behind. Before long, Jessica Daniel had become the center of a long-running crime series, and Wilkinson had gone from self-publishing experiment to full-time novelist with a growing readership in several countries.

He has never stayed in one lane for long. The Jessica Daniel books are police procedurals set in and around Manchester. The Andrew Hunter novels move sideways into private investigation. Standalones like The Girl Who Came Back, Last Night, Close to You and The Tapes lean into domestic suspense, missing people, and the kind of secret that can wreck an ordinary life.

Then there is his younger side of the shelf. Reckoning, the first Silver Blackthorn book, heads into dystopian fantasy, while Ten Birthdays and Truly, Madly, Amy show a softer, more emotional register. He is good at writing jeopardy, but he is just as interested in grief, memory, family strain, first love and the ways people keep going after the worst thing has already happened.

Small towns matter in his work. So do old rumours, long memories, and people trying to outrun earlier versions of themselves. Even in the Manchester crime novels, there is usually a strong sense of neighbourhood, class, routine and place. That may come from growing up somewhere that felt close-knit enough for everybody to know somebody who knew your mum, as he has put it.

He likes a routine.

Wilkinson has spoken about treating writing like a job, plotting heavily before the first draft and then working fast once he knows the shape of a story. Outside the desk, he has said he rides his bike a lot, likes to hike, reads comics, and bakes when he needs his mind to wander somewhere useful. Those details fit the books, which feel planned rather than flashy, brisk rather than showy.

He has also written openly about discovering as an adult that he is autistic, and about the ways that can be both a strength and a challenge in publishing. For all the range in his bibliography, there is a steady line through it: sharp hooks, readable prose, and a real feel for how people talk when they are under pressure. Originally from Somerset, and for many years based in the north of England, he still keeps a connection to home, including supporting a short story competition for young writers in Frome.
