Author bio

Kendare Blake was born in Seoul, South Korea, and brought to the United States as an infant by her adoptive parents. She was raised in Cambridge, Minnesota, far from the haunted islands and dying gods that would later fill her fiction, but the taste for dark stories was already there.

She has been writing since seventh grade.

One of her earliest novel-length efforts was a story about a boy and his horse, which tells you two useful things right away. First, she started young. Second, she was already happiest when following a story for hundreds of pages. She studied at Ithaca College, and later earned an MA in creative writing from Middlesex University in northern London.

London seems to have stuck with her. In her current bio, she jokes that she is still chasing the perfect packet of fish and chips. That kind of plain, offbeat humor fits her books too, even when they are at their bloodiest.

Her first major published novel, Anna Dressed in Blood, arrived in 2011 and quickly introduced the version of Blake many readers still love best: scary, funny, fast-moving, and unexpectedly tender. Its sequel, Girl of Nightmares, keeps the horror high but also digs into grief, obsession, and what happens when love makes a person reckless.

She rarely writes safe, tidy worlds.

The Three Dark Crowns books go bigger, building a whole island kingdom where triplet sisters with different magical gifts are raised to kill one another for the throne. In the Goddess War novels, Greek gods stumble through the modern world while sickness and old grudges tear them apart. Blake likes big premises, but she keeps bringing them back to intimate things: sisters, loyalty, jealousy, hunger, and the awful cost of power.

That is true even when she changes lanes. All These Bodies turns a 1958 murder case into a tense historical mystery with supernatural dread around the edges. In Every Generation opens up a new corner of the Buffy world through Frankie Rosenberg, a teen who becomes the first Slayer-Witch. Champion of Fate heads into epic fantasy with immortal women who shape heroes from the shadows. Across all of them, readers tend to come for the sharp pacing and stay for the complicated girls, the dangerous magic, and the feeling that nobody gets out unchanged.

Her books return again and again to the same questions. What does violence do to the people asked to carry it? What happens when duty and love point in opposite directions? How much of a person is fate, and how much is choice? Even in the middle of ghosts, queens, and monsters, her characters still have to deal with friendship, attraction, loneliness, and being young before they are ready.

Now Blake lives and writes in Gig Harbor, Washington, with her husband and a very full household of cats and dogs. The official version of her bio notes that her work is dark, usually violent, and often includes passages about food when she is writing hungry. That feels fair. Her stories may be full of monsters, but they are grounded by appetite, wit, and people who keep going anyway.
