Kelly Mustian Books in Order

Kelly Mustian grew up in Natchez, Mississippi, at the southern end of the historic Natchez Trace. The river, wooded roads, cemeteries, and deep local history of that landscape became a natural home for the fiction she would later write. Her books return to Mississippi not as a postcard setting, but as a place where history, poverty, family, and memory press on everyday choices.

She was a serious reader early on. Mustian has described coming of age with books by Southern writers such as Carson McCullers, Robert Penn Warren, and Eudora Welty, while trying to make sense of the turbulent Civil Rights years around her.

The path to her first novel began with one stubborn image. As a child, Mustian joined her older sister on trips to old cemeteries along the Trace and came across a crumbling brick tomb with a crack in its lid. That memory stayed with her for decades, until it became the starting point for a story about two young women, a body, and a dangerous place to hide the truth.

That story became The Girls in the Stilt House, her 2021 debut novel. Set in Prohibition-era Mississippi, it follows Ada, a teenage girl forced back to her abusive father's swamp home, and Matilda, the daughter of a Black sharecropper trying to protect her family and build a way out. A death draws the girls together, and the novel follows their uneasy friendship through bootlegging, racial violence, class divisions, and secrets that refuse to stay buried.

The book became a USA Today bestseller and was shortlisted for the 2022 Crook's Corner Book Prize for a debut novel set in the American South. In 2023, Mustian received the Mississippi Library Association's Author Award for Fiction.

Her novel was not the beginning of her writing life. Mustian's work has appeared in literary journals and commercial magazines, and her short fiction received a Blumenthal Writers and Readers Series Award. She has also received a Regional Artist Grant from the North Carolina Arts and Science Council.

Her second novel, The River Knows Your Name, arrived in 2025 and again takes readers into Mississippi's past. The story moves between 1971, when Nell begins looking into the secret of her sister Evie's birth, and the early 1930s, when a young mother named Becca faces hard choices during the Depression. Mustian drew on family recollections, historical research, and visits to places including Natchez Under-the-Hill and the fading river town of Rodney.

Place matters a great deal in Mustian's work. Her characters often have few safe choices, yet they keep looking for family, dignity, and a way forward. The natural world can offer shelter, but it can also hold danger and evidence of what people would rather forget.

Mustian lives with her family near the foothills of North Carolina. Her two novels make a strong starting point for readers who like Southern historical fiction with tense plots, complicated family ties, and people trying to outlast the past.
