Author bio
Kelly Irvin grew up in Kansas and studied journalism at the University of Kansas. Long before she was publishing novels, she was writing as a reporter in El Paso and Laredo, learning how to ask good questions and pay attention to the small details that make a setting feel lived in.
That reporter's eye never really left her.
She spent 10 years in newspapers and then moved into public relations, eventually working for the City of San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department. She and her husband, Tim, moved to San Antonio in 1989, and that city would later become an important backdrop for her suspense novels.
Fiction was the long game. Irvin has said she wanted to write from childhood, but work and family kept taking the front seat. Then, at 45, she had the now-or-never moment that a lot of writers recognize. She started carving out time early in the morning, on lunch breaks, and on weekends. A local Christian writers workshop helped point her toward conferences, critique groups, and the patient craft work that turns ambition into finished books.
Her first published novels were romantic suspense, including A Deadly Wilderness and No Child of Mine. Those books already showed what would become a hallmark of her work: ordinary people pushed into hard situations, with faith and family under pressure right alongside the danger.
Then came Amish fiction. An agent encouraged her to try the genre, and the switch stuck. Series like The Bliss Creek Amish, New Hope Amish, The Amish of Bee County, Every Amish Season, Amish of Big Sky Country, Amish Blessings, and Amish Calling gave her room to write about grief, forgiveness, disability, illness, duty, and second chances without losing sight of romance. Books like The Beekeeper's Son and Upon a Spring Breeze helped make her a familiar name for readers who like Amish stories with a little more weight to them.
She has kept one foot in suspense, too. Over the Line, Closer Than She Knows, Her Every Move, and Trust Me bring that same emotional focus into faster, darker stories, often set around San Antonio. Even when the plots turn dangerous, Irvin tends to stay interested in the same things: broken trust, family strain, the pull of the past, and what it takes to start over.
Her later women's fiction novel The Year of Goodbyes and Hellos feels personal for a reason. Irvin has spoken openly about living with ovarian cancer, and that book grew out of her own experience with illness, family, and the way a diagnosis can rearrange everyone's life, not just the patient's.
These days, she lives in Texas with Tim. They have two children, four grandchildren, and two cats.
Across all her genres, Irvin writes about women and men trying to keep going when life gets messy. That plainspoken mix of heart, trouble, and hope is what keeps readers moving from one series to the next.
