Katt Loves Dogg

by Chris Grabenstein

2021

Lifelong rivals Molly the katt and Oscar the dogg get dragged into family chaos at a wilderness reunion. When two cousins run away together, the uneasy pair must team up for a rescue.

Series background & context

The setup here is simple and funny right away, a world where katts and doggs are supposed to distrust each other on principle. Into that old feud step Molly, a rule-following katt, and Oscar, a more chaotic dogg. They are young, opinionated, and carrying around plenty of assumptions they did not invent but have definitely absorbed.

That is what makes the series more than a string of animal jokes. Once Molly and Oscar are forced to work together, first in the wilderness and then again during a chaotic family reunion, the books become stories about prejudice, loyalty, and learning to see a person instead of a label. The themes are big, but the storytelling keeps them light on their feet.

There are plenty of chases, arguments, near disasters, and comic misunderstandings. The books never forget they are supposed to be fun. But underneath the fur and chaos, they keep asking a useful question, what happens when kids decide they do not have to inherit every old fight?

Molly and Oscar are a good pair because neither one changes overnight. They irritate each other, help each other, and slowly become much more interesting together than they ever are apart.

Read Katt vs. Dogg first, then Katt Loves Dogg. The series works best in order, because the emotional payoff depends on watching their uneasy alliance turn into something stronger.
