Author bio

Chris Grabenstein was born in Buffalo, New York, in 1955, and spent his early childhood there in a loud, imaginative house with four brothers. When he was ten, his family moved to Signal Mountain, Tennessee, and that shift from Buffalo to the woods above Chattanooga stayed with him.

He started early.

As a kid, he wrote skits and puppet shows with his brothers and charged a nickel for admission. In fifth grade he won an essay contest, and a teacher later told him he would make his living as a writer one day. That sort of prediction can either haunt you or help you. In his case, it seems to have done both.

At Notre Dame High School in Chattanooga, he threw himself into writing and theater. Then he went to the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, where he studied communications and theater, wrote for the college paper, and acted in dozens of stage productions. He graduated in 1977, but the mix of words, performance, and timing that shaped his books was already in place.

Then New York happened.

He moved there with a typewriter, a handful of suitcases, and not much money, and started doing improvisational comedy in Greenwich Village. Those years taught him how to keep a story moving, how to trust a surprise, and how to land a joke fast. He also wrote for the Muppets, helped create the TV movie The Christmas Gift, and spent seventeen years writing radio and television commercials. His first boss in advertising was James Patterson, long before the two of them became regular collaborators.

The path to novels was not quick. Grabenstein left advertising in 2001 and spent years getting rejected before his first books finally started coming out in 2005. His adult debut, Tilt-a-Whirl, introduced John Ceepak, the upright Sea Haven cop who became the center of a long-running mystery series. Around the same time, he reworked one rejected manuscript into The Crossroads, a ghost story for younger readers, and discovered he loved writing for middle grade readers.

That turn changed everything. Books like Escape from Mr. Lemoncello's Library, Welcome to Wonderland: Home Sweet Motel, Dog Squad, and The Smartest Kid in the Universe made him a favorite with kids who like fast plots, funny chapters, puzzles, spooky corners, and heroes who are smart without acting perfect. Readers who come to his collaborations with Patterson, especially I Funny, Treasure Hunters, and the Max Einstein books, usually find the same things, big momentum, clear stakes, and a warm spot underneath the jokes.

He writes funny books, but the humor is rarely there just to be cute. Again and again, he comes back to underdogs, kids who think their voices do not matter, and ordinary people who have to improvise when life goes sideways. Libraries, boardwalks, motels, haunted towns, school stages, and game-filled buildings all show up in his work, but the real through line is curiosity. His characters keep opening the wrong door, asking one more question, or following one clue too far, which is exactly why the stories work.

These days, he lives in New York City with his wife, J.J. Grabenstein, and their rescue animals. He still visits schools, still talks to young readers, and still seems to enjoy making stories feel like play. Even after dozens of books, that early basement-show energy is still there.
