Karo Hämäläinen Books in Order

Karo Hämäläinen was born on June 11, 1976, in Mikkeli, Finland, where he also went to school. He grew up as an only child and started making stories early, with a travel typewriter given to him as a birthday present becoming an important first tool.

As a schoolboy, Hämäläinen made his own small publication, Karon Kuvalehti, and wrote detective stories. By eighth grade, he knew he wanted to become a writer. Local writing courses, a supportive language teacher, and encouragement from fellow writers helped turn that early plan into a working life.

He studied Finnish, literature, social subjects, and philosophy at the University of Helsinki, and also studied at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. He has lived in Munich and Berlin as well as in Finland, experiences that fit neatly with the European settings and wide social range found in parts of his fiction.

Hämäläinen began publishing with the children’s novel Samuli, Helsingin herra in 2000. It launched the eight-book Samuli series and set the pattern for a career that has moved easily between books for younger readers, adult novels, journalism, criticism, and nonfiction.

He has never stayed in one lane.

Alongside his writing, Hämäläinen worked in financial journalism, including roles at investment publications. That knowledge of money, markets, status, and risk feeds into adult novels such as Erottaja, a tense story set against the 2008 financial crisis. His fiction is often interested in people trying to control complicated systems, whether those systems are money, public reputation, history, or their own private lives.

In Urho Kekkonen, he created a fictional life of Finland’s long-serving president, using a familiar public figure to explore power and national mythmaking. Kuudes askel follows connected lives through the idea that people may be separated by only a few social links. Later, Yksin offers a fact-based fictional portrait of running legend Paavo Nurmi, looking past the famous bronze image toward discipline, ambition, and isolation.

Yksin brought Hämäläinen both the Savonia Prize and Finland’s Sports Book of the Year award. Erottaja received the Tampere City Literary Prize, while his work for children and young readers has also earned major award nominations.

For English-language readers, Cruel Is the Night shows another side of his work. Set during one increasingly dangerous evening in London, it combines a closed-room murder setup with old friendships, financial scandal, and simmering grudges. It is a brisk contrast to his Finnish historical and social novels.

Today, Hämäläinen lives in Helsinki and works as a freelance writer and journalist as well as a producer for the literary magazine Parnasso. His bibliography stretches from children’s adventures to investing guides and adult fiction, but curiosity about how people behave under pressure runs through all of it.
