Author bio
Carsen Taite built her fiction from the kind of material most writers have to invent. For years she worked as a criminal defense lawyer in Dallas, handling serious cases and learning how pressure changes people. That background still sits at the center of her books. The courtroom language feels lived in because, for her, it was.
She knows how a trial sounds when everything is on the line.
Writing came early, and with a little teenage nerve. In one interview, Taite said she wrote a mystery in middle school to impress a girl. Years later, in 2007, she made a New Year's resolution to finish a novel and send it out. That book, Truelesbianlove.com, was published in 2008, and it gave her a clear lane: smart, sapphic stories with momentum.
Her early run showed what she could do with legal drama. It Should Be a Crime paired a forbidden attraction with a murder trial and went on to become a Lambda Literary Award finalist. Books like Nothing but the Truth and The Best Defense followed with prosecutors, defense attorneys, investigators, and complicated women trying to do the right thing when the facts will not sit still.
Law is the engine, but feelings are the fuse.
That mix gets even sharper in the Luca Bennett books, starting with Slingshot, where a bounty hunter chases fugitives and keeps stumbling into bigger trouble. In the Lone Star Law novels, beginning with Lay Down the Law, Taite opens up a broader Texas world of federal prosecutors, agents, reporters, ranchers, and crime families. Even when the jobs change, the tension is familiar: duty on one side, desire on the other.
She can also shift gears when she wants to. The Legal Affairs series, launched with Practice Makes Perfect, keeps the legal setting but leans more toward workplace romance, friendship, and the chaos of professional ambition. Then a book like Her Consigliere reminds you she is just as comfortable with organized crime, undercover work, and morally gray loyalties as she is with judges and briefing files.
Readers usually come to Taite for a few things: capable women, clean plotting, and high-stakes jobs that actually matter to the story. Her characters are often lawyers, judges, agents, reporters, or investigators, but the appeal is not just the job title. It is the push and pull between ethics, attraction, and survival. Texas settings show up often, especially Dallas, and so do themes of loyalty, second chances, family pressure, and chosen family.
She has kept that lane busy through the 2020s with books like Trial by Fire, Trial and Error, Perilous Obsession, and Made for Her. Some lean harder into courtroom suspense, some into romance, some into crime fiction, but they all carry the same core promise: competent women, tough choices, and a plot that keeps moving. If you like stories where the law is personal, Carsen Taite is easy to keep reading.
