Author bio
Karen Ann Hopkins grew up near Lake Ontario in upstate New York, and horses were part of her world early. She started riding as a child and got her first horse, Lady, when she was eleven. That mix of country life, close observation, and practical work still shows up all through her fiction.
Horses never really left the picture.
Before writing became the center of her career, Hopkins did a little of everything. She worked as a riding instructor, spent time traveling abroad, guided tourists on horseback riding tours in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, and even had a short stint as a paralegal. It is not the usual path into publishing, but it helps explain why her books often feel grounded in real places, real jobs, and the day-to-day details of how people live.
The push toward fiction came from where she lives now. Hopkins settled in northern Kentucky with her family on a farm and found herself living beside a strict Amish community. Spending time with Amish neighbors gave her the spark for Temptation, the young adult novel that introduced Rose and Noah, two teenagers pulled together across a cultural line neither family wanted crossed. That first book opened the door to one of the main threads in her work, forbidden love mixed with family pressure, grief, and hard choices.
That book set the tone for a lot of what followed.
Readers who met Hopkins through Temptation often stayed for the way she writes communities under strain. In later Amish-set romances such as Forbidden Ways and Willow Creek, she keeps coming back to the same kinds of questions: what do people owe their families, what do they owe themselves, and what happens when love asks for more than either side can comfortably give? She tends to write relationships with a lot of emotional pull, but she also keeps one foot planted in the practical cost of those relationships.
She also moved strongly into crime fiction. Lamb to the Slaughter launched the long-running Serenity Adams series, set around the Indiana town of Blood Rock, where Amish communities and law enforcement keep colliding in messy, dangerous ways. Books like Whispers from the Dead, Hidden in Plain Sight, and Wicked Legacy mix murder investigations with family secrets, local politics, and a steady sense that quiet places can hide very dark things.
Hopkins did not stop there.
With Free From Sin, she opened up the rougher Appalachian world of Possum Gap, another crime series built around a strong woman at the center of trouble. She has also written paranormal fiction, beginning with Embers, and a darker psychological thriller in The Fortuna Coin. Across all those genres, certain patterns keep returning: women under pressure, outsiders trying to find their footing, tight communities with long memories, and the trouble that starts when people keep the wrong secrets for too long.
These days, Hopkins still lives in northern Kentucky with her family on a busy farm full of animals, including horses, goats, sheep, peacocks, chickens, ducks, rabbits, pigs, dogs, and cats. She rescues and fosters animals, gives riding lessons, coaches a youth equestrian drill team, and keeps writing. It sounds like a crowded life, and it probably is, but it suits a writer whose books are full of motion, work, risk, and heart.
