Series background & context

Just Beyond is R.L. Stine's middle-grade graphic-novel series about young people discovering horrors close to ordinary life. A school, a family trip or a movie studio can hide something that adults haven't explained. The central characters change between stories, so the series is connected by its approach to fear rather than one hero's continuing quest. Each adventure pushes its children past a familiar setting into a situation where the rules are suddenly different.

The Scare School begins with Jess, Josh and Marco at a middle school that proves more frightening than they imagined. They encounter children dressed in old-fashioned clothes and a creature called a Drogg. Their investigation draws them beyond the school's everyday spaces into a hidden realm. Working out what has happened to the children is only part of the problem, since they also need to find a way to escape themselves.

The familiar place is never quite what it seems.

In The Horror at Happy Landings, a family camping trip exposes Parker and Annie to creatures that can take control of their bodies. A holiday meant to bring the family together becomes a struggle over whether the children can make themselves heard or understood. The threat reaches inside the characters, making it difficult for the people around them to recognize what is wrong. It is another version of the series' central unease: danger can be present before anyone knows how to describe it.

Monstrosity moves the horror to an old Hollywood studio bought by Ruthie and Ezra Dillon's father and uncle. The children are excited about appearing in the movies their family hopes to make. Monsters left behind on the backlot have plans of their own, however, and the difference between a screen fright and a real threat begins to disappear. The setting lets the story play with movie monsters while giving its young characters a personal reason to explore the studio.

The graphic-novel format makes the locations and creatures part of the reading experience from the start. Pictures can show the threat alongside a character's reaction, while dialogue keeps the children at the center of the adventure. The tone combines supernatural horror with the confusion of being young in a world adults seem to control. School troubles, family expectations and excitement about a new experience become entry points into much stranger problems.

Begin with The Scare School for the series' first encounter with a hidden world, then follow the other adventures for new casts and settings. Readers who enjoy visual storytelling can move from the school mystery to a camping nightmare or a haunted movie backlot without needing one continuous character arc. What returns is the question of how children can protect themselves when ordinary places stop behaving as they should.
