Author bio
R.L. Stine was born Robert Lawrence Stine in Columbus, Ohio, on October 8, 1943, and grew up in nearby Bexley. His father worked as a shipping clerk, and Stine has described a childhood where money was tight and he was often shy. Being happy alone in his room turned out to be useful. It gave him time to make things up.
When he was nine, Stine found an old typewriter in the attic and carried it down to his bedroom. He began typing stories, joke books, and little magazines, then handed them around at school, even when teachers took them away. He was already learning a lesson that would stay with him: a scary idea works better when there is a laugh nearby.
After writing for his high-school newspaper, Stine attended Ohio State University. He moved to New York City after graduating and took a range of writing and editing jobs. Before the monsters arrived, he built a career in children's humor, writing under the name Jovial Bob Stine and editing the kids' humor magazine Bananas.
For a long time, funny was his main thing.
That changed in the 1980s. Stine wrote Blind Date, a teen horror novel, in 1986, then followed it with books including The Babysitter, Beach House, and Hit and Run. In 1989, he started the Fear Street series with The New Girl. Those books gave teen readers high-school drama, dangerous secrets, and scares that could turn up in an ordinary neighborhood.
Then came Goosebumps.
The series began in 1992 with Welcome to Dead House and soon found a huge audience of younger readers. Its stories are usually built around one memorable problem, such as a creepy new home, a cursed camera, a living dummy, a mask that will not come off, or green slime with a mind of its own. Books such as Stay Out of the Basement, Say Cheese and Die!, The Haunted Mask, and Night of the Living Dummy show the basic Stine recipe: an everyday kid, an impossible threat, a quick pace, and a last-page turn that may not let the reader relax.
His characters are often new in town, stuck at camp, visiting relatives, or trying to get through a normal school day. Adults may not listen. Friends may not believe them. The young person at the center has to keep asking questions, take a chance, and face the thing nobody else wants to see. The danger can be spooky, silly, strange, or all three at once.
Stine married editor and writer Jane Waldhorn in 1969, and the pair worked together on books and publishing projects over the years. Their work helped turn his ideas into long-running series that reached readers around the world. Goosebumps also moved beyond the page through television adaptations and films, but the books remain simple in the best way: short chapters, uneasy setups, and a strong reason to read just one more.
He has written for several age groups, from joke books and picture books to teen horror, comics, and middle-grade scares. Yet the attic typewriter still feels like the right starting image for his career. A kid stayed in his room, wrote down odd ideas, and kept going.
