Into the Jungle

by Dustin Stevens

2021

Kari Ma takes on a job that looks simple on the surface. It does not stay simple for long once the mission pushes deep into hostile terrain.

2

Out To Sea

by Dustin Stevens

2022

The calm surface hides far more than it should in this second Jumper novel. Kari Ma heads into another assignment that quickly turns dangerous and unstable.

Series background & context

The Jumper series appears to run on the oldest thriller trick in the book, a job that sounds simple until it absolutely is not. The lead character is Kari Ma, and from the beginning of Into the Jungle the pattern seems clear. She gets handed a task with a clean surface, then discovers the surface was the lie.

That is a strong engine for a series.

The titles do a lot of the work here too. Into the Jungle and Out to Sea promise movement, hostile environments, and action stories where the setting is part of the danger rather than just scenery. These do not look like sit-in-an-office-and-think-it-through thrillers. They look like books where the assignment keeps moving and the protagonist has to adapt in real time.

Kari Ma also gives the line a focused identity. Rather than a broad ensemble, Jumper seems to be built around one capable person dropped into high-risk situations that test her judgment as much as her nerve. That usually makes for quick, clean storytelling, which fits Stevens well.

If you want a shorter, sharper action series with a strong lead and a sense of travel, this is the one to watch. Expect jobs gone sideways, dangerous terrain, and the constant feeling that the real mission only becomes visible after things have already started to fall apart.
