Author bio
Joy Ohagwu writes Christian suspense and inspirational fiction that blend danger, faith, romance, and second chances. Before she was publishing novels, she was the kind of reader who could happily disappear into a book for hours. She has also said that action-heavy movies were a close second, which helps explain why so many of her stories move quickly while still making room for the heart.
Her academic path ran through two countries. She earned a bachelor's degree in Political Science from the University of Ibadan, then later completed a master's degree in International Affairs at American University in Washington, D.C. Along the way, she picked up multiple honors for academic excellence, research, and student leadership.
She did not come to fiction from a narrow lane.
Ohagwu has written that her faith in Jesus changed the direction of her life, and that personal story sits close to the center of her work. Her novels return again and again to people who are cornered by grief, fear, shame, or danger, then asked to trust God anyway. That does not make the books quiet. If anything, it gives the action more weight.
Her best known body of work is The New Rulebook, a suspense sequence that begins with Ruby Masters and Robert Towers, and grows into a wider saga of crime, family fallout, and redemption. Readers who like technology-driven threats, chase scenes, and strong spiritual stakes often start there. Later books tied to Pete Zendel widen that same world and show how one man's past can keep shaking other lives for years.
She also writes the Pleasant Hearts novels, which follow the Heart sisters through romance, danger, and family strain, and the After books, which lean more toward healing, family, and spiritual renewal. In She Knows Her God, she pushes into missing persons cases, trafficking threats, and the risks that come with refusing to look away from suffering. Across these series, titles like Uncommon Ground, After, She Knows Her God, and The Blessing show how comfortable she is moving between suspense and hope-filled drama.
She has said she writes in the evenings, on weekends, and whenever she can steal the time, including while waiting for dinner to finish cooking.
That small detail feels right for her books. They read like the work of someone building stories in the middle of a full life, steadily and with purpose.
Ohagwu is also a member of American Christian Fiction Writers. She lives in Maryland, in the Washington, D.C., capital region, and continues to build a catalog centered on grace, perseverance, and people who discover that a broken season is not always the end of the story.
