Author bio
Joy Avery is a North Carolina native who grew up in Garner and knew early that writing was where she wanted to go. By day, she works as an engagement manager. By night, she turns to contemporary romance, writing stories about attraction, timing, pride, and the messier parts of love.
Romance novels were the spark.
Avery has said that once she discovered romance, she knew those were the stories she wanted to tell. That origin point still shows in her work. Her books are romantic, of course, but they are rarely disconnected from everyday life. They are usually about adults with jobs, history, family ties, and emotional bruises trying to make room for happiness anyway.
A lot of readers meet her through Honey Hill. Starting with Something So Sweet and continuing through Sweeter Than Honey and Accidental Sweethearts, that series shows one of her favorite things to write, small-town North Carolina life where everybody notices everything. The books mix second chances, fake dating, accidental marriage, local gossip, and a strong sense of place. Honeybees, old buildings, town pride, and nosy neighbors all get their turn.
Her other series shift the mood without losing the emotional focus. In Indigo Falls, especially His Until Sunrise and His Ultimate Desire, the stories feel quieter and more intimate, with wilderness settings, homecomings, and guarded characters doing a lot of the work. The Lassiter Sisters novels, Never, Maybe, and Always, stay close to family, following sisters in Mount Pleasance as they deal with heartbreak, healing, and men who are not nearly as easy to ignore as they would like.
She likes writing people who have something to lose.
That is true in her standalones and novellas too. Soaring on Love starts with a public disaster and turns into a snowbound romance. Campaign for His Heart plays with fake dating on the campaign trail. A Gentleman's Agreement and In the Market for Love show how interested Avery is in grown-up stakes, where work, money, reputation, or community pressure are part of the emotional equation. Even the shorter books tend to deliver a full arc.
She has also said she wants her love stories to feel real, in the characters, the journey, and the payoff. That feels accurate. Her couples tend to be adults who have already made mistakes, built walls, and learned that attraction alone is not enough. The pleasure of her books is watching those walls crack, sometimes slowly, sometimes all at once, until vulnerability starts to look less like weakness and more like the only way forward.
Her work has picked up several romance award nominations, including honors named for Beverly Jenkins, Brenda Jackson, Adrianne Byrd, Rochelle Alers, and J.M. Jeffries. Those lists matter, but they do not explain the whole appeal. What stands out more is the consistency. Readers usually know they are going to get warmth, sensuality, humor, and characters who feel like people you could actually meet.
Avery lives in North Carolina with her husband and has kept her off-the-page interests pleasantly human. She enjoys reading, crafting, and collecting glitter and Sharpie markers. She has also shared a love of butterflies and big cats, and once took piano lessons as an adult. It is an easy picture to like, a writer with a practical day job, a playful streak, and a real fondness for happy endings.
