Journey to Canaan is Carole Towriss's Old Testament trilogy about the Exodus generation and the long, difficult road toward the Promised Land. It begins in Egypt and moves through decades of wandering, loss, leadership changes, and war, while keeping its attention on people who stand near the better-known figures of Moses and Joshua.

The opening novel, In the Shadow of Sinai, follows Bezalel, a gifted Hebrew artisan kept inside Pharaoh Ramses II's palace even after other Israelites are driven out. He feels cut off from his own people and blames El Shaddai for the isolation. When Moses and Aaron arrive and Egypt is shaken by the plagues, Bezalel has to confront the anger that has shaped his life.

Then the people leave Egypt.

Bezalel's story unfolds alongside an Egyptian child-slave, a captain of the guard, and a young concubine. The escape from Egypt is only the beginning, because freedom brings its own uncertainties. The novel uses the familiar events of the Exodus to ask what it means to trust God when a person's gifts, loyalties, and future have all been unsettled.

In By the Waters of Kadesh, the focus widens to Kamose, once one of Egypt's trusted soldiers, and Tirzah, a young widow recovering from abuse and neglect. Their future is tied to a community still waiting to enter Canaan. Meanwhile, Tirzah's brother-in-law Gaddiel is selected as one of the spies sent to scout the land, but his private ambition threatens the mission.

The final book, The Walls of Arad, takes place forty years after the escape from Egypt. Israel's punishment in the wilderness has ended, and the people are finally moving toward the land promised to them. The Canaanite king of Arad strikes first, taking hostages, including Zadok, Bezalel's grandson and a man more used to caring for the Tabernacle flock than fighting.

The series carries its characters across generations. Family history matters, as do old wounds and the choices made by parents, grandparents, leaders, and enemies. Readers see the movement from slavery to freedom not as one triumphant moment but as a long process that tests people again and again.

Expect biblical historical fiction with travel, military danger, family relationships, and faith at the center. The trilogy works best in order because the later books build on the people and consequences of the earlier ones, even as new characters step forward to carry the story.
