Author bio

Carole Towriss was born and raised in San Diego, California, a city she still describes with the loyalty of a true beach person. Her mother introduced her to Jesus before she could talk, and the faith passed down through her mother and grandmother remains an important part of how Towriss sees family, hardship, and hope.

She loved biblical fiction long before she began writing it herself. As a young reader, she was especially taken with The Robe, a novel that imagines the life of the Roman soldier connected to Jesus's crucifixion. That interest in the people just outside the center of a familiar Bible story became the starting point for her own work.

Towriss likes the "I wonder?" question.

What might have happened to the people who receive only a line or two in Scripture? What did they fear, want, lose, or learn? Her novels build stories around those smaller figures while keeping the larger biblical setting in view.

She studied English education in college, where she met her husband, John. Towriss then taught high school for several years before leaving the classroom to focus on raising their family. She and John have four children, and the family makes its home outside Washington, D.C.

Her first novel, In the Shadow of Sinai, arrived in 2012. It follows Bezalel, an enslaved Hebrew artisan in Egypt, through the Exodus and opens the Journey to Canaan trilogy. The books that follow, By the Waters of Kadesh and The Walls of Arad, stay close to Israel's long road from Egypt toward the Promised Land.

Towriss also writes New Testament fiction. In Sold Into Freedom, a captive young woman and a disgraced Roman officer cross paths in Philippi as Paul brings a disruptive message of freedom. More than Conquerors moves to Thessalonike, where Kassandra and Jason must decide what their new faith will cost them. Deep Calling Deep brings Paul, Timothy, and the Roman official Sextus Burrus together in tense first-century Rome.

Her books often return to people caught between status and conscience, family pressure and personal conviction, fear and trust. They also make room for women whose stories are sometimes passed over, including Jochebed in A Mother's Sacrifice and Eliyanah in No Stone Cast.

There is room for romance, danger, and ordinary domestic life, too.

Away from the page, Towriss has shared that she enjoys the beach, Mexican food, chocolate, chick flicks, and British television. Her books carry that same mix of serious questions and everyday human details, making ancient settings feel lived in rather than distant.
