Josie Pigeon Books in Order

The Josie Pigeon mysteries follow a woman who is good at building things and not especially interested in being pushed around. Josie runs Island Contracting, a construction company with an all-woman crew, on a Florida barrier island. She is also a single mother, which means the demands of work, parenting, money, and community life are already enough before a crime lands on one of her job sites.

Then it does.

In Shore to Die, Josie is working to renovate a beach house when she finds a body beneath a drop cloth, only for the body to disappear. It is a neat introduction to the series' main ingredients: a working construction site, a job that cannot simply be abandoned, an island full of people with strong opinions, and a murder that feels uncomfortably close to home.

Josie is a practical amateur sleuth. She knows materials, tools, schedules, and the personalities of the people who work alongside her. She is used to looking closely at a problem before deciding how to fix it. That habit carries into her investigations, even when the police would prefer that she stay out of the way.

The construction business gives each book its own source of pressure. A client can be unreasonable. A renovation can go wrong. A crew member can be under suspicion. An old house may hold more history than anyone expected. In Permit for Murder, a look-alike is found dead at Josie's job site. In Deck the Halls with Murder, the poisoning of a carpenter puts stress on Josie's crew just before the holidays.

The island matters as much as the job sites. It is a resort community, a workplace, and a small social world where people run into one another at stores, restaurants, beaches, and civic events. Josie may be surrounded by sun and water, but the tone is not a vacation from responsibility. She has payroll to meet, projects to finish, a son to raise, and relationships to manage.

The later novels widen the setting without losing Josie's point of view. This Old Murder brings a television remodeling crew to one of her projects, leaving Josie a murder suspect after a body appears. Murder in the Forecast uses an approaching hurricane to make an already difficult case more urgent. In A Fashionable Murder, Josie heads to New York City when her boyfriend Sam becomes the leading suspect in the death of his former girlfriend.

At heart, these are cozy mysteries with sawdust on their shoes.

The final book, Death at a Premium, returns Josie to a renovation at Bride's Bed and Breakfast, where wedding plans, insurance troubles, troubling pranks, and a real corpse all compete for her attention. Across the series, the mysteries are self-contained, but reading in order lets you see Josie's work, family life, crew, and relationship with Sam develop over time.

Readers should expect capable women, job-site complications, small-community gossip, and cases that grow out of ordinary workdays gone badly wrong.
