Author bio

Valerie Wolzien was born in Akron, Ohio, and grew up in New Jersey. Her mysteries have an easy familiarity to them, built around the kinds of places where everybody notices a new face, a strange car, or an unexplained absence.

She attended college in Denver and in Fairbanks, Alaska, and studied English literature at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Those moves gave her experience of very different parts of the country, but the fictional worlds she created are usually close-knit ones, where home life and community business overlap.

The first push toward fiction came during a PTA meeting when her son was in grade school. Wolzien got the idea for a mystery there, then turned it into Murder at the PTA Luncheon, the first Susan Henshaw novel, published in 1988.

It was a useful place to begin.

Susan is a Connecticut wife and mother who gets pulled into murder investigations amid school events, holidays, local politics, weddings, family worries, and neighborhood gossip. The setup lets Wolzien have fun with the everyday machinery of suburban life while still giving Susan plenty of motives, secrets, and suspects to sort through.

The debut later became the CBS television movie Menu for Murder. Wolzien continued Susan's story through books including The Fortieth Birthday Body, We Wish You a Merry Murder, Remodeled to Death, and Death in Duplicate. In 1992, We Wish You a Merry Murder was nominated for a Dilys Award.

Her second main series takes a different route. Shore to Die introduces Josie Pigeon, a single mother who runs Island Contracting with an all-woman construction crew on a Florida barrier island. Josie's work puts her in unfinished houses, around demanding clients, and directly in the path of trouble. Later books include Permit for Murder, This Old Murder, Murder in the Forecast, and Death at a Premium.

Construction is never just background in these books. A renovation can expose an old secret, bring together a difficult crew, or leave Josie with a body where there should be drywall, tools, and paint.

Wolzien's two series share a warm, lightly comic take on amateur detection, but their leads approach life from different angles. Susan works from her web of family, friends, and town connections. Josie brings the practical instincts of a business owner who has to keep a job moving even when murder stops everything else.

Both women have responsibilities before the mystery arrives, and those responsibilities do not disappear once it does. Kids still need attention. Parties still need arranging. Contractors still need managing. That balance is a big part of the appeal.

During the years she was publishing these novels, Wolzien lived with her family in an old Victorian house overlooking the Hudson River. She was also remodeling the house, an experience that gave her plenty of contact with the builders, electricians, and carpenters whose work helped shape Josie Pigeon's world.

For readers who like cozy mysteries with domestic details, community friction, and capable women who won't leave a question alone, Valerie Wolzien offers two inviting places to start.
