Author bio
Josephine Angelini grew up in Ashland, Massachusetts, the youngest of eight children and the daughter of a farmer. She has described her family as loud, funny, and full of strong personalities, which helps explain why her books so often feel packed with sibling energy, loyalty, and conflict.
Family matters in her work because family mattered in her life.
She started writing young, first in a journal her sister gave her when she was ten. Later she studied theater at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, with a focus on the classics. That mix, private notebook writing on one side, Greek drama on the other, turned out to be a pretty direct path to the kind of stories she would eventually tell.
The road to publication was not especially neat. After college she bartended and waited tables, kept filling notebooks, and slowly admitted that writing was the thing she wanted to do for real. She has recalled a moment when a professor saw her writing in a journal and told her, plainly, that she was a writer. That nudge stuck.
The classics never really left her.
Her breakout novel, Starcrossed, takes the emotional machinery of Greek myth and drops it into a contemporary love story. The books that followed, Dreamless and Goddess, turned that setup into a larger saga about fate, family feuds, and the cost of trying to outwit destiny. The trilogy became an international bestseller, and those books also picked up Reader's Choice recognition in Germany. She later returned to that mythology in Scions, Timeless, and Endless, which shows how much life she still saw in that world.
She followed that with the Worldwalker books, beginning with Trial by Fire, then Firewalker and Witch's Pyre. Those novels trade ancient Greece for an alternate Salem where magic beats science and the heroine has to face a far more powerful version of herself. Readers who like fast plots, big feelings, and fantasy worlds built around identity tend to gravitate to this side of her work.
She doesn't stay in one lane for long.
Writing as Josie Angelini, she also published Snow Lane, a middle grade novel that draws on the feel of growing up in a huge family in Massachusetts. Later, after a serious illness and cancer treatment, she wrote What She Found in the Woods, a darker thriller shaped by trauma, memory, and suspicion. More recently, she has moved into cozy fantasy with Illustrated Girl, The Tinker's Daughter, and Ensorcelled, books that feel more playful without losing her interest in brave girls, messy choices, and strange worlds.
Across the bibliography, a few patterns keep returning. Angelini likes heroines who feel out of place before they discover what makes them powerful. She likes stories where fate presses hard, but choice still matters. She likes family ties that protect and suffocate in equal measure. Even when the setting is mythic Nantucket, alternate Salem, or a storybook land called Lucitopia, the emotional engine is usually the same. Who are you, really, and what do you do once you know?
She now lives in Massachusetts with her husband and daughter. Whether she is writing YA fantasy, suspense, middle grade, or a gentler fairy tale adventure, her work keeps circling back to identity, courage, and the trouble people get into when they try to outrun themselves.
