Free-Wrench Books in Order

Free-Wrench is Joseph Lallo's steampunk adventure series, and it wastes no time showing you what kind of world you are in. Much of the land has been swallowed by a toxic haze called the fug. The people who survived adapted the hard way, building airships, clinging to high places, and turning engineering into a tool for survival as much as progress. It is a great setup for a series that likes motion, machinery, and scrappy people.

At the center is Amanita Graus, usually called Nita.

Nita comes from Caldera, a sheltered island society that values art far more than the kind of wrench-turning work she loves. She is already a bit of a black sheep before the real story starts. When her mother falls ill, Nita leaves the safety of home to chase the one thing that might help, and that decision throws her into the path of the Wind Breaker, an airship crew packed with smugglers, engineers, oddballs, and people who are much harder to pin down than they first appear.

That crew is the heart of the series. Cap'n Mack, Butch, Gunner, Lil, Coop, Wink, and the rest give the books a strong found-family feel. Nita may arrive as the outsider, but the pleasure of the series is watching how she earns her place through skill, nerve, and stubbornness. She is not the sort of heroine who wins because fate picked her. She wins because she can fix things, read a situation fast, and keep going when everyone around her is panicking.

The books begin with a personal goal, finding help for her mother, but the scope keeps widening. What starts as one young engineer's desperate gamble becomes a broader story about power, class, technology, survival, and the people who control access to all of it. Later books pull the Wind Breaker crew into even bigger schemes, deadlier enemies, and the sort of reputation that makes every new job more dangerous than the last.

The tone is adventurous and welcoming. There is plenty of action, but also humor, camaraderie, and a real affection for machines and tinkerers. If you like steampunk that leans toward sky pirates, improvised repairs, and complicated loyalties instead of pure Victorian mood, Free-Wrench lands very nicely.

It is a series about airships, yes. But more than that, it is a series about people building a life in a damaged world, and trying to do some good while they are at it.
