Author bio

Jonathan L. Howard came to fiction by way of scripts, games, and a long apprenticeship in telling stories sideways. In the early 1990s he started working as a scriptwriter and video game writer, and he later co-scripted the first three Broken Sword adventure games. He still reads like someone who knows how to move a scene, land a joke, and keep a mystery humming.

Before that, though, he was the sort of child who made up strange stories before he could properly write them down. He has spoken about early fuel coming from Doctor Who, Gerry Anderson, Grimm's fairy tales, and a local library that put Poe and Bradbury in his path very early. That mix of the macabre, the playful, and the faintly alarming never really left him.

For years, games were the job and fiction stayed in notebooks. Then one especially encouraging response to his writing for games gave him a push. Howard has said that the praise made him wonder if he might actually be able to write professionally, so he went back to old notes and started working through them again.

One set of those notes was about a necromancer named Johannes Cabal.

That changed the direction of things.

His first novel, The Necromancer, arrived in 2009 and introduced the character he is still best known for, a deeply dry, deeply difficult scholar of death who treats most social problems as interruptions to research. Howard followed it with The Detective, The Fear Institute, The Brothers Cabal, and The Fall of the House of Cabal, plus a run of shorter Cabal fiction. Readers tend to come for the deadpan humor, the monsters, and the gothic machinery, then stay for the way the books keep changing shape, from Faustian carnival tale to airship mystery to nightmare expedition and beyond.

He has never stayed in one lane for long. With Katya's World and Katya's War, he moved into young adult science fiction on an ocean planet where submarines, politics, and survival all matter at once. With Carter & Lovecraft and After the End of the World, he folded cosmic horror into detective fiction and alternate history. He also wrote the Goon Squad stories, a superhero police serial set in a stranger version of Manchester, which says a lot about the range of things he finds fun.

Across all of that work, certain interests keep turning up. Howard likes clever people with blind spots, broken systems that still somehow function, and worlds where the rules are clear enough to be argued with but weird enough to bite back. Even when he is writing about devils, werewolves, or undersea colonies, there is usually a practical question buried inside the fantasy: what does this place cost the people trying to live in it?

These days he lives near Bristol, England, with his wife and daughter. He has kept a fairly low-key public profile, but his books are anything but quiet, they are funny, grim, inventive, and very happy to take one more step into the dark if that is where the interesting stuff is.
