The Last Child

by John Hart

2009

Thirteen-year-old Johnny Merrimon refuses to believe his missing twin sister Alyssa is dead, even after the search in their rural North Carolina town has faded. Obsessed with finding her, he roams dangerous back roads and secrets that adults would rather keep buried.

Series background & context

The Johnny Merrimon books follow a boy who refuses to accept that the world has given him a final answer. They begin with a missing child in a small North Carolina town and grow into a strange, haunting story about land, memory, and the cost of holding on.

In The Last Child, Johnny is thirteen when his twin sister Alyssa vanishes on her walk home. A year later the police search has cooled and the adults around him are falling apart. His mother is numbed by grief, his father is gone, and the town has quietly decided Alyssa is dead.

Johnny refuses to believe it. Armed with a notebook, a bicycle, and the kind of grim determination that only a hurting kid can muster, he starts his own search. He maps out where predators live, sneaks through backyards and trailer parks, and pushes into the rough edges of Raven County that most people avoid. Detective Clyde Hunt, the cop who never truly let the case go, watches from the sidelines, torn between protecting Johnny and following the leads the boy keeps turning up.

What gives the first book its weight is the way that search collides with everything else going wrong in Johnny’s life. Old crimes, powerful men, and long-standing grudges bubble up as he digs. The mystery of Alyssa’s disappearance sits at the center, but the story keeps circling family loyalty, broken promises, and how far a child will go when adults fail him.

The second book, The Hush, jumps ahead about a decade. Johnny, now in his early twenties, has withdrawn from ordinary life and lives alone on six thousand acres of wild land called Hush Arbor. The property is thick with swamp and forest, and it carries a bloody history that ties together his ancestors and a Black family whose roots there run just as deep.

On the surface, The Hush is about a legal fight over that land and about eerie, sometimes violent events that keep happening in the woods. Underneath, it is about what happens when a place feels more like home than any house ever has, and about how history refuses to stay buried. Johnny’s oldest friend, lawyer Jack Cross, is pulled into the struggle and serves as a bridge between the civilized world and the dangerous pull of the Hush.

Taken together, the Johnny Merrimon books mix Southern crime fiction with touches of coming-of-age story and, later, a brush of the supernatural. They are steeped in North Carolina back roads, collapsing houses, and foggy river bottoms. Readers who like mysteries anchored in character, place, and long-held secrets tend to find this duo especially memorable.
