Johnny Be Good

by Paige Toon

2008

Meg Stiles heads to LA to work as personal assistant to notorious rock star Johnny Jefferson. Caught between backstage chaos and the steady support of writer Christian, she must decide whether bad‑boy chemistry is worth risking her job—and her heart.

Series background & context

The Johnny Be Good books follow Meg Stiles, a young Londoner who swaps a sensible office job for life as a personal assistant to rock star Johnny Jefferson. What starts as a dream move to LA quickly becomes a crash course in fame, temptation and blurred boundaries.

In Johnny Be Good, Meg arrives in California expecting to organise a demanding but glamorous client. Instead she finds a charismatic, self‑destructive musician who is used to getting his own way. Her days swing from quiet admin to wild parties, late‑night studio sessions and trying to coax Johnny onto planes he’d rather miss.

Johnny isn’t the only person who unsettles her. Christian, the thoughtful writer working on Johnny’s biography, offers Meg a calmer kind of connection. The tension between steady friendship and dangerous attraction runs through the series, as Meg figures out what she actually wants from love, work and home.

Baby Be Mine picks up with Meg living in the south of France, raising her little boy with devoted boyfriend Christian and trying to keep her past firmly in the past. The problem is that her son might be Johnny’s child, not Christian’s, and the resemblance is getting harder to ignore. The sequel digs into secrecy, guilt and the cost of finally telling the truth.

The short story Johnny's Girl shows Meg and Johnny on the other side of that turmoil, married with two young sons and a house by the river. On paper they have everything, but moving back to LA throws them into the glare of celebrity again. Old insecurities resurface, and a teenager from Johnny’s past brings a new kind of responsibility neither of them can dodge.

Across all three stories you see Meg navigate backstage chaos, tabloid attention and the very ordinary challenges of building a family with someone who spent years avoiding commitment. Johnny is still impulsive and infuriating, but also capable of growth, and the books give space to both sides of him.

The series ties directly into the Jessie Jefferson novels, which follow the life of Johnny’s newly discovered daughter.

If you start with Johnny Be Good, then move on to Baby Be Mine and Johnny's Girl, you’ll get the full arc of Meg and Johnny’s relationship before seeing it from Jessie’s point of view. Expect glitzy settings, messy choices and a surprising amount of heart beneath the headlines.
