The Gold Coast

by Nelson DeMille

1990

Tax attorney John Sutter enjoys a comfortable life among Long Island’s old-money elite until Mafia don Frank Bellarosa buys the neighboring estate. As Bellarosa pulls John into his legal troubles and schemes, Sutter’s marriage and morals begin to quietly unravel.

Series background & context

John Sutter is DeMille’s guide to Long Island’s old Gold Coast, a world of inherited money, guarded estates, and the uneasy meeting point between high society and organized crime. Through him the two Sutter novels mix social comedy with slow-burn suspense and a strong sense of place.

In The Gold Coast John is a tax attorney from a modest background who has married into the aristocratic Stanhope family. He and his wife Susan live in a guest house on her parents’ grand estate along the North Shore, trying to maintain an elegant, slightly bored existence. That equilibrium shatters when Mafia boss Frank Bellarosa buys the neighboring mansion and insists on becoming John’s new friend and client.

As Bellarosa’s legal troubles mount, John is drawn deeper into the don’s affairs and household, blurring every line he thought separated his tidy professional life from the world of gangsters. The novel spends as much time on dinners, parties, and barbed conversations as it does on overt crime, using John’s wry narration to show how power and charm can be as dangerous as guns.

Ten years later, The Gate House finds John returning from a self-imposed exile at sea and in London. He moves into the small gatehouse on what used to be Susan’s family property, now owned by others, and discovers that both Susan and Bellarosa’s son Anthony are back on the scene. Old attraction and old grudges collide as Anthony seeks revenge for his father and looks to pull John once more into a scheme that could end very badly.

Across the two books DeMille uses Long Island’s grand lawns and crumbling fortunes to explore class, loyalty, marriage, and the cost of trying to stay neutral when dangerous people take an interest in you. John Sutter is not a professional cop or soldier; he is an intelligent, often reluctant observer who learns that simply living next door to violence can be enough to pull you under.

These novels also share connective tissue with the John Corey books, which occasionally nod to the Gold Coast setting and its inhabitants. Reading the Sutter novels gives extra depth to DeMille’s broader Long Island universe while standing on their own as sharp, character-driven dramas.

If you enjoy dark humor, social satire, and the slow tightening of a noose around a seemingly ordinary man, start with The Gold Coast and then move directly to The Gate House to see where John and Susan finally land.
