Author bio
John Scherber is a Minnesota native whose books often follow people drawn into danger by art, history, travel, and the messy business of other people's secrets. For many years, he made his fictional home in Mexico, especially San Miguel de Allende, the colonial city that became the setting for his long-running Paul Zacher mysteries.
Writing came early. In high school, Scherber wrote a ghost story, and at the University of Minnesota he belonged to an honorary creative-writing group that included Garrison Keillor. After college, he took a salaried writing job in the mental-health field and tried his hand at two novels.
He wasn't happy with either one, so he stopped.
Scherber then built a very different working life. He designed and built custom furniture, paneled rooms, and restaurant interiors, and spent years away from fiction. He later described himself as blocked for 37 years, even though he kept trying to return to writing every few years.
The break came in 2005, when he began what became Twenty Centavos. The novel introduced painter Paul Zacher and opened the door to the Murder in Mexico series. Scherber and his family settled in Mexico in 2007, and San Miguel de Allende gave him both a lived-in setting and a steady supply of visual detail, from old houses and galleries to expat gatherings and local history.
Then the books kept coming.
In the Murder in Mexico novels, Paul, his partner Maya Sanchez, and retired detective Cody Williams take on murders, stolen art, ancient artifacts, and cases that pull them well beyond their home base. The Fifth Codex turns on a disputed Maya manuscript, while Brushwork begins with a portrait commission and a suspicious death. Later books such as The Missing Matisse, Strapped, and Santa Julia Gold keep art, ownership, and buried history near the center of the trouble.
Scherber has also written outside the series. His nonfiction includes San Miguel de Allende, Into the Heart of Mexico, Living in San Miguel, and Expat Life, books shaped by the practical and personal sides of living abroad. A Writer's Notebook grew from his own long detour back to fiction and offers advice for people finding their way into the work.
His other fiction takes some sharp turns. And Dark My Desire and And Darker My Wrath follow Monty Townshend, a vampire waking into a world that has moved on without him. The Devil's Workshop is a paranormal suspense novel linking deaths in several American cities to a painter in Mexico. The Amarna Heresy heads to Egypt and Jordan, where an archaeological discovery brings dangerous attention.
Scherber has said that storytelling is the job, and that readers deserve a writer who stays focused on it. That practical view fits his books, which favor quick-moving plots, dry humor, art-world puzzles, and characters who have to keep improvising when a simple job goes very wrong.
After 16 years in Mexico, Scherber moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico, in 2023. He continues to paint as well as write, with Southwestern and Hispanic life and culture appearing in both parts of his creative work.
