Author bio

John Maddox Roberts was born on June 25, 1947, in Ohio, and he grew up largely in Texas, with time in California and New Mexico as well. That mix of places seems to fit the shape of his career. He never stayed in one fictional corner for long, and his books move easily between ancient Rome, deep space, alternate history, and hard-traveling adventure.

His path to writing was not especially neat. After college was interrupted in the late 1960s, he entered the U.S. Army and served from 1967 to 1970, including a tour in Vietnam. Those years stayed with him. When he later wrote about veterans, violence, or men trying to live with old damage, the feeling was usually plain and direct, not borrowed.

Then he came home and tried fiction.

It worked. His first published novel was The Strayed Sheep of Charun in 1977, a science fiction story that he later expanded into Cestus Dei. Early on he wrote a lot of science fiction and fantasy, sometimes under the name Mark Ramsay. Books like Space Angel, King of the Wood, and the Falcon adventures show how comfortable he was with fast plots, hard travel, and worlds built from pressure rather than ornament.

A lot of readers know him best for ancient Rome. The King's Gambit, first published as SPQR, launched his long-running Roman mystery series and became an Edgar Award finalist in 1991. Its narrator, Decius Caecilius Metellus the Younger, is one of Roberts's best creations: smart, nosy, politically connected, and often in over his head. In later books like Saturnalia and The Temple of the Muses, Roberts kept using murder cases to open up the daily machinery of the late Republic, from elections and priesthoods to gangs, courts, and family power.

He knew how to make old worlds feel lived in.

But he never became only the Rome guy. Hannibal's Children and The Seven Hills imagine a Mediterranean world where Carthage beat Rome and history bent in a different direction. A Typical American Town and The Ghosts of Saigon move into modern crime fiction, following private investigator Gabe Treloar through small-town secrets, wartime memories, and the long tail of bad decisions. Roberts also wrote several Conan novels and a Dragonlance tie-in, Murder in Tarsis, which tells you something about how much he liked strong settings and clean narrative momentum.

His prose was usually straightforward, and that is part of the appeal. He did not need to announce that a scene mattered. He trusted the setup, the characters, and the consequences to do the job. Even when he was writing fantasy or far-future science fiction, there was often a practical streak in the storytelling. People wanted things. Power had a cost. The past did not stay buried.

Roberts lived in New Mexico with his wife and retired from writing around 2011. He died in Estancia, New Mexico, on May 23, 2024, at the age of 76. By then he had left behind a body of work that covers a surprising amount of ground while still feeling recognizably his, brisk, intelligent, and always moving.
