John Etterlee grew up near Augusta, Georgia, and left home after joining the U.S. Army in 2001, not long after the September 11 attacks. He had planned to make the military his career, and for years that looked like the path he was on.

Army life took him far from Georgia. He served multiple overseas tours and later said those years opened his eyes to other cultures and gave him a wider sense of the world. His longest deployment was a thirteen-month tour in southeastern Baghdad with 2-30 Infantry, 4th Brigade, 10th Mountain Division, from 2007 to 2009.

That stretch was hard.

Etterlee has spoken plainly about it. He was in two IED blasts, his unit took regular mortar, rocket, and RPG fire, and he lost friends during that deployment. You can feel some of that lived experience in his fiction. His books tend to move quickly, but the danger never feels abstract.

Writing came later. While recovering from back surgery in a military hospital in 2010, he started taking it seriously. After he was medically retired in 2013, he found a new way to use what he knew, by turning combat experience, travel, and the rhythms of military life into thrillers.

His debut novel, Sniper: Black Ops, arrived in 2018 and introduced a covert, sniper-led world built around Victor, a former British Army marksman. A year later he shifted to Montana with The Cold Storm, where Roger O'Neil, a former Army Ranger, finds that a family getaway can turn into a fight for survival. Readers who click with Etterlee usually come for the pace and the action, but they also tend to stay for the loyalty between teammates and the way ordinary family life keeps colliding with violent work.

Then came Strike Point, which pushes Roger into espionage and nuclear brinkmanship, and The Messenger, which introduces Rob Walker, a Special Forces sniper trying to rescue his kidnapped sister from a cartel. Retribution, Blood Red, and An Imminent Threat widen that canvas even more, moving through Africa, Ukraine, the Middle East, Mexico, and the United States. Across those books, Etterlee keeps returning to veterans, operators, and people who know exactly how bad a situation is, and go anyway.

He writes like someone who knows what pressure feels like.

That shows up in the details. His stories are full of snipers, clandestine units, rescue missions, hunted families, and men pulled out of quiet lives when the world refuses to stay still. The settings vary, from Montana snow to Moscow streets, but the through line stays pretty steady: protect your people, finish the mission, and deal with the cost later. He has also pointed to writers such as Tom Clancy, John Grisham, Jack Carr, and Brad Thor as influences, which fits the way his books blend military action, espionage, and crime.

Etterlee lives in North Carolina with his wife, Elizabeth. Outside writing, he has said he enjoys traveling, especially to Europe, learning German, meeting new people, spending time outdoors, and listening to rock music, with Breaking Benjamin and Def Leppard among his favorites. It is a grounded picture, which suits the books. Even when the stakes get global, his heroes are usually people trying to hold on to something personal.
