Author bio
John Conroe was raised in Saint Lawrence County, New York, near the Canadian border. He grew up around the rural north country, Adirondack wilderness trips, library shelves, and the kind of cold weather that makes a person take indoor hobbies seriously.
Reading did not grab him right away. In his own telling, an experimental elementary school gave him the choice between new reading methods and toys, and he chose the toys. His mother stepped in, reading became non-negotiable for a while, and soon fiction won out over chores whenever it could.
That habit stuck.
Conroe’s early reading leaned hard toward science fiction, fantasy, and adventure. Edgar Rice Burroughs, Robert Heinlein, J.R.R. Tolkien, Jack London, Andre Norton, Robert E. Howard, H. Beam Piper, and Anne McCaffrey all fed the mix. So did the outdoors. He spent time backpacking, canoeing, and learning woodcraft, and later became a lifelong dabbler in martial arts.
After high school, he attended SUNY Cortland. He nearly derailed his freshman year by choosing Dungeons & Dragons over class a little too often, but he still graduated on schedule with a degree in Economics and Management Science. Then came banking and financial planning, a practical career that lasted more than thirty years.
He also met his future wife while giving her a car loan, which is a pretty specific meet-cute for a future urban fantasy writer.
Writing arrived in midlife. Conroe finished one book first, decided it was best left buried, and then found the shape of the world that became the Demon Accords. God Touched introduced Chris Gordon, a New York rookie cop and exorcist whose side job turns out to be the start of a much bigger fight. From there, books like Demon Driven, College Arcane, Demon Divine, and Bloodlines built out a fast, snarky world of vampires, werewolves, witches, demons, angels, and dangerous politics.
He did not stay in one lane. The Zone War trilogy moves into near-future science fiction, with a drone-haunted Manhattan and a young salvage specialist named Ajaya Gurung. A Murder of Shadows opens the Shadows of Montshire fantasy series, trading modern supernatural combat for spies, swords, court danger, and a kingdom that needs people who can work in the dark.
Readers often come to Conroe for quick pacing, banter, capable fighters, found-team loyalty, and a steady sense that the next problem will be bigger than the last. His work often circles back to family, training, competence, and what powerful people owe to the people around them.
Conroe later left his financial career and now writes full time from Maine. He has thanked his wife and daughters often for their support, ideas, patience, and for keeping him grounded when the fictional vampires and werewolves start getting too much attention.
