Author bio
John Carson grew up in Edinburgh, Scotland, soaking up the city’s pubs, closes, and backstreets long before he turned them into crime scenes on the page. He read a lot of crime and horror, and started jotting down stories in the early 1990s.
Those first efforts were horror novels, three of them, written around a full time day job. In 1997 he decided to lean into crime instead. He created a detective called DCI Justice and took a weekend writing course in Edinburgh where Ian Rankin was the tutor. When Carson finished his first Justice novel, Rankin read it and sent back a detailed report that encouraged him to keep going.
After a few more early books and a spell with a London literary agency, Carson watched the traditional route narrow. His agent left the business, and he chose not to start the query cycle again. Instead he turned to self publishing, bringing out the DI Frank Miller series, set in Edinburgh, in 2014. Titles like Crash Point, Silent Marker and Rain Town introduced readers to a young detective inspector still learning the job the hard way.
In 2019 he launched what would become his best known work, the DCI Harry McNeil novels, a Scottish crime series that went on to hit number one in its category. McNeil, a Major Investigation Team boss with a background in Professional Standards, moves through cases that criss cross with Miller’s world. Around the same time, Carson dusted off his old DCI Justice notes, reworked the stories, and turned that character into DCI Sean Bracken, giving the original idea a new life.
Carson has since continued to widen his universe. He writes the DCI James Craig books, about a Met detective who returns to Fife and finds old cases waiting for him, and the DCI Liam Brodie novels, which follow a lauded Edinburgh cop into a Fife unit with its own buried problems. On the thriller side he created the Max Doyle series, featuring a jailed U.S. Army Ranger pulled into a covert outfit, and Old Habits, which centres on former FBI agent Scott Marshall in small town New York. The shorter Calvin Stewart run spins a worn out Scottish superintendent and a grumpy pathologist into their own offshoot.
Across all of these books, certain patterns show up. Carson likes detectives with history, whether it is grief, professional scars, or mistakes that still haunt them. His stories favour solid police work, awkward humour in the squad room, and crimes that grow out of greed, jealousy, or old secrets rather than elaborate masterminds.
In 2006 he moved from Edinburgh to New York State, settling in a small Hudson Valley town where his American wife grew up. He writes there now, sharing the house with his family, two dogs and four cats, and keeping one foot on each side of the Atlantic in his fiction.
Carson still treats writing like a job you turn up to every day. The result is a steady stream of Scottish crime novels and thrillers that connect with each other, letting readers follow familiar detectives into new investigations without needing any insider knowledge to jump in.
