Joe Noose Books in Order

The Joe Noose series is a fast, violent Western built around a bounty hunter who has seen the frontier at its worst and still tries to live by his own rules. Joe Noose works in a world where wanted posters, reward money, and shifting loyalties can decide who gets to walk away. He is not presented as a spotless hero, but he has a line he will not casually cross.

The series begins with Noose, when fellow bounty hunters frame Joe for a murder and turn him into the wanted man. The setup gives the books their basic engine, Joe is skilled at tracking people, but he is just as likely to become the prey. The action moves through the rougher parts of the Old West, where lawmen, outlaws, hired guns, and opportunists all have a price.

Hanging Fire widens Joe's world by pairing him with Bonny Kate Valence, a notorious gunslinger who needs to be delivered alive for execution. Joe must get her safely across dangerous country while dealing with people who want her dead before she reaches the gallows. It is a prisoner-escort story with a useful complication, Joe cannot afford to trust the woman in his custody, but leaving her unprotected is not an option either.

The later books give Joe cases with more personal and more unsettling stakes. In Branded, he pursues a killer whose signature connects to a scar Joe has carried since childhood. In The Crimson Trail, he rides with a long cattle drive through Montana after a string of murders makes every rider a possible suspect. Marshal Bess Sugarland becomes an important ally in these later adventures, adding another steady presence to Joe's dangerous work.

These are not quiet, reflective frontier tales. The books favor pursuits, shootouts, bad weather, grim crimes, and tense encounters where nobody has much room to make a mistake. Red brings a thriller writer's pace to traditional Western material, so the stories move quickly while still making use of cattle towns, rail travel, jail cells, back-country trails, and the wide distances between help.

Joe remains the thread that holds it all together. He is tough, capable, and often outnumbered, but his decency shows in the choices he makes when the easy answer would be to look away.

Read the books in publication order. Each novel has its own central job or investigation, but the order lets readers follow Joe's changing role in the West and his growing connection with the people willing to ride beside him.
