Eric Red Books in Order

Eric Red was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and grew up in Manhattan. Long before he began publishing novels, he was drawn to the practical business of telling tense, visual stories, the kind that put ordinary people in bad situations and make every exit feel blocked.

He studied screenwriting at the AFI Conservatory in Los Angeles and graduated in 1983. While there, he wrote and made the short film Gunmen's Blues. Trying to get the film distributed left him broke, and he spent a year driving a cab in New York City before his next script changed the course of his career.

That script was The Hitcher, first written as his AFI thesis. The 1986 film turned a lonely stretch of highway into a place readers and viewers might think twice about entering. Its premise is simple, a driver picks up the wrong stranger, but Red's interest is in the pressure that follows when help is far away and danger refuses to let go.

He soon became closely associated with genre movies that mix horror, crime, and hard-driving suspense. He wrote Near Dark, the 1987 vampire film made with director Kathryn Bigelow, and later wrote Blue Steel, another collaboration with Bigelow. He also made his feature directing debut with Cohen and Tate and went on to direct films including Body Parts, Bad Moon, and 100 Feet.

The jobs may be different, but the recurring questions are familiar. What happens when a person is cornered? Who keeps control when fear takes over? And how much can a character endure before they start making choices they never expected to make?

Red likes putting people under pressure.

His move into prose began with Don't Stand So Close, a coming-of-age novel set in small-town Iowa. From there, he kept moving across genres rather than settling into one lane. The Guns of Santa Sangre and The Wolves of El Diablo bring werewolves into an Old West landscape of train robberies, desert towns, and silver bullets. It Waits Below heads far beneath the ocean with a salvage mission facing an ancient threat, while White Knuckle follows an FBI agent hunting a long-haul trucker who has evaded capture for years.

His Joe Noose books take a more straight-ahead Western route, though danger is never far from the page. Joe is a bounty hunter with a rough reputation and a stubborn sense of right and wrong. Across Noose, Hanging Fire, Branded, and The Crimson Trail, Red uses the frontier for manhunts, prison transports, cattle drives, and crimes that keep getting more personal.

He has also worked in comics. Containment, illustrated by Nick Stakal, sends a small group of astronauts into a nightmare aboard a spacecraft when a cryogenic-system failure turns much of the crew into zombies. It is a fitting extension of the concerns that run through Red's work, confined spaces, escalating panic, and people forced to act before they have all the answers.

Los Angeles has remained the center of his professional life, with work spanning screenplays, directing, fiction, and graphic storytelling. Whether the setting is a highway, a desert rail line, a school hallway, or a spacecraft, Red tends to begin with one question: what could go wrong here? Then he keeps pushing.
