Author bio

Jodi Thomas grew up in Amarillo, Texas, in a family with deep roots in the state. She has often described herself as a fifth-generation Texan, and that long family memory shows up all through her fiction. Her books tend to know the land, the weather, the pride, and the stubbornness of Texas from the inside.

She left Amarillo to attend Texas Tech University in Lubbock, where she earned a master's degree in Family Studies. Later she married Tom Koumalats, traveled while he served in the U.S. Army, and eventually returned to Amarillo. Both of them taught, and for about fifteen years she taught family living at Amarillo High School.

Writing started as a practical idea.

In 1984, worried about how she and her husband would pay for their sons' college education on teacher salaries, she began writing at night. Her first published piece was an article about Llano Cemetery in Amarillo, and she also sold short stories for children. She has said that part of what pushed her toward romance fiction was frustration. Too many historical romances she picked up got the history wrong or built relationships that did not feel believable to her.

That side project turned into a career.

Her first novel, Beneath The Texas Sky, helped put her on the map, and by 1991 she was able to leave teaching and write full time. Over the years she built a wide Texas shelf, from historical romances like The Texan's Wager, To Kiss a Texan, and Texas Rain to contemporary small-town books like Welcome to Harmony, Ransom Canyon, and Breakfast at the Honey Creek Café. Readers often come to her for the same reason: the stories feel warm, grounded, and human even when the circumstances get dramatic.

A lot of her fiction circles the same questions. What makes a home. How do wounded people trust each other. What happens when someone who has always felt like an outsider is finally offered a place to stay. Her heroes are often ranchers, lawmen, drifters, or quiet men carrying old losses. Her heroines are usually practical, brave, and a little more complicated than the people around them first assume.

The towns matter too.

Whether she is writing frontier Texas or a modern community like Harmony, Honey Creek, or Ransom Canyon, she likes places where everybody knows part of the story and nobody knows all of it. Families stretch across books. Secondary characters wander forward into later novels. A romance may be central, but there is usually also a town to save, a ranch to hold together, a feud to outlast, or a secret to finally bring into the light.

Her success has been steady and easy to see in plain facts. She has millions of books in print, has appeared on bestseller lists, was inducted into the Romance Writers of America Hall of Fame in 2006, and entered the Texas Literary Hall of Fame in 2022. She also served as writer in residence at West Texas A&M University.

These days she still lives in Amarillo with her husband. When she is not writing, she has said she enjoys traveling, renovating a historic home, and keeping up with her grown sons and grandchildren. It all fits the books, really. Big Texas skies, busy family life, and people still trying to get home.
