Author bio
Jodi Meadows writes the kind of books that start with a big fantasy hook and then get personal fast. Reincarnated souls, outlawed magic, dragons, immortal warriors, pirate mermaids, wrong-number texts, she has room for all of it. She lives in the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, and her work ranges from young adult fantasy to funny collaborative alternate history to middle grade contemporary.
She has said she always wanted to write professionally, once she gave up on becoming an astronaut.
That mix of daydreaming and determination shows up all over her career. Meadows has talked about how bookstores and libraries helped make her a reader, and how discovering books with magic in them really sealed the deal. You can feel that reading life behind her stories. Even when the worlds are huge, they still feel built by someone who loves the way books can take one strange idea and follow it all the way through.
Her first novels put her squarely in young adult fantasy. The Incarnate trilogy begins with Ana, the first new soul born into a world where everyone else has been reincarnating for thousands of years. It is a romantic setup, but it is also a story about belonging, memory, and what it means to matter when everyone around you expects you not to. Later fantasy series kept that same interest in identity under pressure. In The Orphan Queen, a displaced princess survives as a thief and spy while trying to reclaim her kingdom. In the Fallen Isles books, Before She Ignites starts with a heroine who has been treated as a symbol of peace all her life, even as anxiety and secrets threaten to crack that image apart.
She does not stay in one lane for long.
Meadows is also one third of the team behind My Lady Jane and the other wildly funny Jane and Mary books she wrote with Cynthia Hand and Brodi Ashton. Those novels take tragic or overly tidy stories from history and literature and gleefully rewrite them with magic, jokes, and much better odds for the girls at the center. The collaboration introduced a different side of her work, lighter on the surface, but still interested in agency, friendship, and refusing the ending everyone else expects.
Her later books keep stretching the range. Nightrender leans darker, with warring kingdoms, demons, and an immortal warrior who may be humanity's best hope or its worst mistake. Then Bye Forever, I Guess shifts into middle grade and proves she can write contemporary awkwardness just as well as high fantasy peril. That book follows Ingrid, a shy gamer whose online life feels easier than school, until a wrong-number text opens the door to real connection.
Across all of these books, Meadows tends to return to a few things. Characters who feel out of place. Girls asked to carry too much. Worlds where power has a cost. And relationships, romantic, familial, or found, that matter just as much as the fantasy machinery.
Off the page, she sounds a lot like someone who enjoys making life a little weirder and more handmade. Her public bio mentions yarn, ink, outer space, cats, and spinning wheels, which feels exactly right for a writer whose books can be sharp, funny, earnest, and a little offbeat all at once. She still writes from Virginia, still moves comfortably between solo work and collaboration, and still seems happiest when a story gives her room for both wonder and trouble.
