Author bio
Joanna Wayne was the pen name of Jo Ann Vest, a Louisiana-born writer who built a long career out of romantic suspense. Her books mix fast danger with strong family ties, and they almost always know exactly where they are, Texas ranch country, New Orleans streets, or the damp hush of the bayou.
She was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, and grew up there. Reading started early for her, and she often said she was already making regular library trips at four years old, hauling home stacks of books and finishing them almost as quickly as she checked them out.
The move toward writing came later. In 1984, after she married and moved to New Orleans, she took a writing class and joined a professional writing organization. That change of city mattered. New Orleans, with its music, heat, history, and shadowy corners, gave her the kind of atmosphere that would later show up all through her fiction.
Her first Joanna Wayne novel, Deep in the Bayou, was published in 1994. After that she wrote steadily, especially for Harlequin, and built up a body of work that moved easily between Louisiana-set suspense and Texas family sagas. Books like Attempted Matrimony, Alligator Moon, Trumped Up Charges, Cowboy Swagger, Riding Shotgun, and New Orleans Noir give a good sense of that range.
Love and danger were always in the room.
Readers tend to come to Joanna Wayne for the same things again and again, and happily so. She liked women under pressure, men who were protective but not perfect, children and family loyalties that raised the stakes, and plots built around stalkers, kidnappings, murder investigations, missing people, and old secrets that refused to stay buried. Even when the books move quickly, there is usually a wound under the surface, a past betrayal, a family split, a grief no one has dealt with, or a truth someone has hidden for too long.
Setting mattered just as much as plot. Wayne returned again and again to Louisiana, especially New Orleans and bayou country, but she also made Texas feel solid and lived in. Series such as Sons of Troy Ledger, Big D Dads, Big D Dads: The Daltons, and The Kavanaughs lean into ranch life, estranged relatives, protective cowboys, and the pull of home. She had a knack for making a ranch gate, a back road, or a dark stretch of marsh feel like a real part of the suspense.
Her success was easy to see in plain facts. Her books appeared on romance bestseller lists, and Surprise Package and Attempted Matrimony both won Romantic Times Reviewers' Choice Awards. She also taught creative writing and spoke at writing and community events, which fits the feeling of her work, story as something lively, generous, and meant to be passed along.
She kept writing for decades.
Later in life she lived north of Houston, Texas, while still keeping deep family and emotional ties to Louisiana. She died in March 2024. Her books remain a strong entry point for readers who want category romantic suspense with real momentum, vivid Southern settings, and just enough family drama to make the danger hit harder.
