Midnight Rider brings in a dead twin sister, an orphaned infant, and bull rider Cannon Dalton, while Showdown at Shadow Junction adds a kidnapped heiress, a missing necklace, and a Navy SEAL bodyguard.

The family drama matters as much as the crime plot.

By the time you reach Ambush at Dry Gulch, the ranch feels less like scenery and more like the place where the whole broken family story has been working its way toward repair. The danger in these books is personal, missing children, stalkers, murder investigations, old revenge, and criminals who know exactly where it will hurt most. But so is the tenderness. Wayne is interested in what happens when protective instincts and unfinished family business collide.

If you want a Joanna Wayne series with a strong continuing arc, this is a very good pick. The books can stand alone, but they gain a lot from being read in order because R.J. Dalton's attempts at reconciliation keep changing the emotional weather. Expect a mix of ranch life, law enforcement, second chances, and characters who have to decide whether home is still worth fighting for.
