Joan Hall Hovey Books in Order

Joan Hall Hovey grew up in Saint John, New Brunswick, a Bay of Fundy city that has remained central to her life. She has said that becoming a published writer was a dream from as far back as she can remember, and reading was part of that pull from the beginning.

As a young reader, Hovey gravitated toward the unsettling side of fiction, from Edgar Allan Poe and Shirley Jackson to later psychological-suspense writers. That interest did not fade. It became the engine behind stories about fear, loss, obsession, and the hard work of trusting yourself again.

She was drawn to what people hide from one another.

Writing was not Hovey's only creative outlet. She worked as a freelance writer and as a copywriter for radio station CFBC. She also loved drama, performed as an amateur actor, and worked as a director and producer in theatre and radio. Her shorter work has appeared in newspapers, magazines, and anthologies, including the story “Dark Reunion,” which was selected for Investigating Women.

She has also spent time helping other writers. Hovey has led creative-writing workshops and talks at schools and libraries, taught creative writing, and worked as a tutor for distance-learning students. Earlier in her community work, she was a teaching coordinator for Vietnamese and Laotian women and children.

Her first novel, Listen to the Shadows, arrived in 1991. It began a run of standalone suspense novels where a woman facing a personal crisis finds that the danger around her is real, immediate, and often much closer than it first appears.

That pattern carries through books such as Nowhere to Hide, Chill Waters, The Abduction of Mary Rose, The Deepest Dark, and And Then He Was Gone. Hovey often puts ordinary women in difficult moments, grief, betrayal, a broken relationship, a frightening discovery, then asks what happens when they refuse to stay powerless. Her settings include small towns, isolated homes, lakeside cabins, and places that ought to feel safe but do not.

In Nowhere to Hide, psychologist Ellen Morgan challenges the killer who murdered her younger sister. Chill Waters sends Rachael back to a beloved beach house after her marriage falls apart, only to find a predator watching. The Abduction of Mary Rose follows Naomi Waters as she investigates the violent past that shaped her own birth. Later books add grief, missing people, escaped prisoners, stalkers, and occasional paranormal touches to the suspense.

Hovey married young and raised four children. For many years she lived with her husband and family in Gondola Point, overlooking the Kennebecasis River. After her husband died and her children were grown, she moved back to Saint John, where she has lived in a historic part of the city with her calico cat, Bella.

Her fiction stays close to the emotional aftermath of violence and betrayal, but it is also interested in endurance. Readers looking for psychological suspense with vulnerable but determined protagonists will find that thread running through much of her work.
