Author bio
Jenna Kernan grew up in the Leatherstocking Region of upstate New York, in a part of the country that seems made for someone who likes woods, weather, and open ground. A job later brought her to the Hudson Valley, just north of New York City, where she lived and worked for about thirty years. She wrote whenever she could, then left that career in 2015 to write full time.
That long runway shows in the range of her books. She has written western historical romance, romantic suspense, paranormal romance, police procedurals, and domestic thrillers. The genres change, but the engine is often the same: danger, pressure, and people who do not get the luxury of standing still.
She likes the outdoors, and it shows.
Kernan has said that if something can be done outside, she probably enjoys it. Gold prospecting, gem hunting, fossil hunting, and scuba diving have all been part of her life. That helps explain why place matters so much in her fiction. Mountains, forests, reservations, rivers, and rough country are never just wallpaper. They shape the plot, corner the characters, and change what survival looks like.
Readers who come to her western romances often start with books like Winter Woman, The Trapper, or Outlaw Bride. Those stories mix frontier hardship with strong emotional stakes, and they tend to give equal weight to romance and survival. In books such as His Dakota Bride and Gold Rush Groom, she returns to outsiders, long journeys, and people trying to build a life in places that do not make anything easy.
Her suspense novels pull on some of those same threads, just in a different register.
In the protector books, including Shadow Wolf and Turquoise Guardian, she writes about lawmen, soldiers, agents, and women caught in the path of violence. Then in later thrillers such as A Killer's Daughter and The Ex Wives, the danger moves indoors, into families, marriages, and secrets that should have stayed buried. A Killer's Daughter won a bronze medal in popular fiction from the Florida Book Awards, and The Ex Wives took gold the following year.
She has also won the Book Buyers Best Award and was nominated twice for the RITA. Those are useful signposts, but what matters most on the page is consistency. Kernan writes fast-moving stories with capable women, wounded men, strong settings, and trouble that rarely stays where it started. Even when she shifts from western romance to psychological suspense, you can still spot the same interest in loyalty, hidden pasts, family strain, and the cost of trust.
Now she lives in Florida with her husband and writes full time. Her more recent books lean hard into psychological suspense and domestic thriller territory, but plenty of readers still circle back to the westerns, paranormal romances, and romantic suspense that built her audience in the first place. Pace, place, and emotional pressure, that is the lane she keeps making her own.
