Jeff Nania Books in Order

Jeff Nania was born and raised in Wisconsin, where his family settled in Madison's Greenbush neighborhood. Long before he began writing mysteries, the outdoors was a big part of his life. His father would pack Jeff, his brothers, and a couple of dogs into an old station wagon for adventures, experiences that helped shape his love of lakes, woods, wildlife, and small-town community.

That landscape remains central to his work. Nania writes crime stories set in Wisconsin's Northwoods, where a quiet cabin road, a wetland, or a fishing lake can be as important to the story as any clue. The places feel lived in because they grow from a lifetime of paying attention to the natural world and the people who depend on it.

His road to fiction included several working lives. Nania has worked in law enforcement, conservation, and biofuel development, and he also wrote narrative nonfiction for outdoor publications. That mix gave him a practical grounding in police work, conservation questions, rural life, and the sometimes messy business of local politics.

It also gave him plenty to write about.

Nania made his fiction debut with Figure Eight, the first Northern Lakes Mystery featuring John Cabrelli. The novel introduces a former law enforcement officer trying to rebuild his life after a career-ending tragedy, only to find trouble waiting near the northern Wisconsin cabin he inherits. It won the Midwest Book Award for Mystery/Thriller, and it established the series' mix of personal stakes, community tensions, and investigations shaped by the landscape.

The later books, including Spider Lake, Bough Cutter, Musky Run, and River Gold, keep Cabrelli in and around the fictional communities of Musky Falls and Namekagon County. A missing federal agent, a death in the backwoods, a dangerous threat during a wilderness race, and a murder tied to old legends all push the series in new directions. Readers who enjoy small-town mysteries with capable investigators, outdoor settings, and a steady sense of danger will find those elements throughout.

The Northwoods aren't just scenery here.

Nania's conservation work has also been recognized beyond fiction. He received the National Wetlands Award for wetland restoration, and he was named among the nation's 25 most influential conservationists by Outdoor Life. The Wisconsin Senate also commended his work involving wetlands, education, and natural-resources advice. Those experiences help explain why land, water, wildlife, and public stewardship often matter in his novels without taking over the mystery.

The people around Cabrelli matter just as much. Nania's stories return to neighbors, local officials, friends, hunters, business owners, and law enforcement colleagues whose loyalties do not always line up neatly. The series asks who can be trusted, but it also leaves room for the ordinary kindness and stubbornness that hold a small community together.

Now a full-time novelist, Nania still spends as much time as he can outdoors in Wisconsin with friends and family. Fishing, exploring the state's landscape, and staying close to its natural resources remain part of the life behind his books.
