JD Trafford Books in Order

J.D. Trafford writes legal thrillers shaped by the parts of the justice system that rarely feel simple. His books put lawyers, judges, clients, police, and families in the same pressured spaces, then ask what happens when the rules are not enough to make things right.

Before publishing fiction, Trafford graduated with honors from a top-twenty law school. He has worked as a civil and criminal prosecutor, an associate at a large national law firm, and a nonprofit attorney representing people who could not afford legal help. That range of work gives his stories a practical feel without turning them into lectures.

He also worked in Washington, D.C., and lived in St. Louis before law school, focusing on housing, education, and poverty in communities of color.

The law is not just scenery in these novels. It is where people with very different resources, histories, and hopes are forced to meet.

Trafford's first published novel, No Time To Run, introduced Michael Collins, a former New York lawyer who has tried to leave his old life behind in Mexico. The follow-ups, No Time To Die and No Time To Hide, keep Michael caught between his talent for legal combat, the people he cares about, and the consequences he would rather outrun. The books mix courtroom pressure, trouble with federal investigators, and a slightly offbeat group of allies.

His later standalones take on heavier public questions. In Little Boy Lost, St. Louis lawyer Justin Glass searches for a missing teenager after the boy's young sister comes to him for help. Trafford had carried the character of Justin for years, then returned to St. Louis and Ferguson after the 2014 killing of Michael Brown, finding a setting and a set of questions that made the story click. The result is a crime story rooted in a city dealing with grief, racial tension, and distrust.

Good Intentions follows Judge Jim Thompson as a mentor's murder and the demands of child-protection court push his professional judgment to its limits. In Without Precedent, Manhattan attorney Matthew Daley is forced to reconsider the pharmaceutical industry he has spent his career defending after a personal loss. Merchants Bridge begins the Dark River series with attorney Graydon Wendt trying to clear his name after a violent attack destroys his sense of what happened.

Across the books, Trafford returns to people who know the system from the inside but cannot stay detached from its human cost. His protagonists tend to be capable, flawed, tired, and still willing to take one more difficult case.
