Where should I start?
If you want the core Kit Colbana story: Blade Song → Night Blade → Broken Blade → Edged Blade
If you like world-expanding side stories: Bladed Magic → Damon → Misery's Way → Haunted Magic → Doyle
If you want darker fairy-tale romance: Candy Houses → No Prince Charming → Crazed Hearts → Tarnished Knight
If you want the later Grimm run: Locked in Silence → Grimm Tidings → Blind Destiny → Furious Fire → Grimm's End
If you want a standalone science fiction read: Final Protocol
Author bio
J.C. Daniels is the urban fantasy name used by Shiloh Walker, a Kentucky-born writer who says she has been reading hard since she was six. Writing started early, too. In middle school, a boring teacher and a book ending she didn't like pushed her from daydreaming into making up her own stories, and that habit never really left.
Her first book was published in 2003, and she moved into full-time writing in 2004. Before that, she worked as a nurse, which helps explain the practical streak that runs through a lot of her fiction. Even when the setting is full of demons, witches, or shapeshifters, her characters tend to notice the damage, the fear, and the work it takes to keep going.
She did not arrive by way of a tidy career plan.
Walker has said that a friend in nursing school once told her about a dream, a bookstore, and a book with Walker's name on it. That moment made the idea feel real. Under the J.C. Daniels name, she leaned into paranormal and urban fantasy, especially stories where danger is personal and survival has a long memory. The pen name gave her room to separate that darker lane from the contemporary romance and romantic suspense she also writes as Shiloh Walker.
If you start with Blade Song, you can see the appeal right away. The book introduces Kit Colbana, a sharp, battered heroine who works cases in a supernatural world that keeps getting worse the closer you look at it. Readers who stick with Night Blade and Broken Blade usually come for that same mix, fast action, messy loyalty, bruised romance, and a main character who never feels invincible just because she can fight. The later Kit books keep widening that world without losing the rough emotional edge.
She also has a knack for fairy-tale material that doesn't feel cute or polished. In Candy Houses and the later Grimm's Circle books, familiar story bones become something stranger, hotter, and more dangerous. Then there is Final Protocol, a science fiction detour that still sounds unmistakably hers, built around a trapped killer, a buried past, and the question of what freedom might cost. Different setup, same interest in damaged people who keep moving.
She clearly likes characters who have to earn every scrap of peace they get.
Across both names, the patterns are easy to spot. Walker writes wounded heroines, dangerous protectors, old grief, supernatural politics, and relationships that matter because the people in them have something real to lose. There is usually some mix of found family, survival, second chances, and the stubborn hope that broken people can still build a life. Even when the books get dark, they do not stay emotionally cold.
These days, she lives in the Midwest with her family. She has said she married her high school sweetheart at nineteen, is a mom, a wife, a reader, and a pretend amateur photographer, which feels exactly like the kind of self-description a working writer would choose. She still reads widely, and the mix she has mentioned, romance, fantasy, paranormal fiction, and thrillers, fits the books she writes.
