Series background & context

The Colbana Files follows Kit Colbana, a sword-carrying investigator working in a hidden supernatural world full of shifters, vampires, witches, and much older monsters. She takes jobs that sound manageable and almost never stay that way. What begins as missing-person work or a favor for a friend usually turns into a fight over power, bloodlines, or something ancient that should have stayed buried. The setting feels contemporary, but the danger is very old.

Kit is tough, but the books never pretend toughness fixes everything.

She is a survivor of a brutal family past, and that history matters. It shapes how she trusts people, how she fights, and why every new bond carries risk. The series builds a strong circle around her, especially Damon Lee, the alpha of the Southern Cat Clans, plus friends and allies like Justin and Colleen. Those relationships are a big part of the appeal. The romance is important, but it never crowds out the larger story about loyalty, recovery, and what it costs to keep showing up.

Each main novel has its own immediate problem. In Blade Song it is missing children. In later books the trouble expands into council murders, stolen relics, disappearing nonhumans, and enemies from Kit's own past. That gives the series a nice rhythm, a case to solve now, and a bigger myth arc building in the background. The world keeps opening up, but it still stays close to Kit's point of view and the bruised, practical way she sees things.

The tone sits between urban fantasy and paranormal romance. There is action, but also aftermath. People get hurt, carry baggage, make bad calls, and still try again. If you like found family, protective shifters, capable witches, and heroines who have to rebuild themselves piece by piece, this series lands well. It is not cozy, and it does not wrap everything up neatly at the end of every book.

Nothing stays small for long.

The side stories help flesh out the world rather than distract from it. Bladed Magic shows Kit before the first novel, while Damon, Misery's Way, Haunted Magic, and Doyle shift the camera to other characters and let the wider supernatural community breathe. If you want the cleanest entry point, start with Blade Song and move forward in order. If you already know you like long-running urban fantasy with emotional bruises and sharp teeth, this is the lane.
