Author bio

Jay J Falconer writes fast, high-pressure fiction that sits at the crossroads of action, science fiction, and end-of-the-world suspense. He describes himself as a lifelong reader turned storyteller, and that background shows in the kinds of books he makes. They are built to keep moving, but they also care about the people trapped inside the trouble.

He likes momentum.

Falconer also has a screenwriting side to his career, and that visual training is easy to spot on the page. His scenes tend to open late, push hard, and get right to the problem. That approach has earned him screenplay awards in film festival competition, including several wins in 2018, and it helps explain why so many of his novels feel ready for a camera even when the ideas get big and strange.

A lot of his best-known work lives in survival territory. Bunker throws former combat engineer Jack Bunker into a grid-down invasion nightmare and lets the series build from there into resistance, betrayal, and all-out war. Lethal Rain uses toxic red storms, collapsing infrastructure, and a broad conspiracy to create a different kind of pressure. Readers who come to Falconer for post-apocalyptic fiction usually come for exactly that mix, practical danger, relentless pacing, and characters who have to make ugly decisions fast.

Then he shifts the lens.

In the Emily Heart books, including Glassford Girl, Shadow Games, and Girl Out of Time, Falconer moves into younger territory without getting softer. Emily is a teenage runaway changed by experiments she never agreed to, and her story blends time jumps, pursuit, mystery, and the ache of wanting an ordinary life back. In the Lucas Ramsay novels, first seen in Linkage and later reissued as Gravity Wave, he pushes further into science fiction, with anti-gravity research, alien war, time travel, and parallel selves colliding at full speed. Taken together, those series show what he tends to return to again and again, people under stress, systems failing, and the question of what survival does to identity.

The results have connected with a wide audience. Falconer has hit the USA Today bestseller list, reached number one in a range of Amazon categories, and picked up Readers' Favorite gold medals for dystopia and young adult action. He has also won recognition for his screenplays, including science fiction honors at film festivals. He does not write small, quiet premises very often, but the success makes sense once you see the lane he works in. He knows how to turn a big setup into a page-turner.

He lives in the high mountains of northern Arizona, a detail that comes up often when he talks about his work and routine. The clean air, wide views, and rougher outdoor setting seem to fit the worlds he likes to build. When he isn't writing, he has said he spends time training, shooting, hunting, exploring the outdoors, and getting ready for whatever comes next.

That last part feels very on brand. Falconer's books are full of people who never get the luxury of staying comfortable for long. Whether he is writing Jack Bunker in a town under siege, Emily Heart on the run through time, or Lucas Ramsay trying to undo a disaster of his own making, he keeps coming back to the same basic idea. Pressure reveals character.
