Author bio
Jay Hogan was born and raised in New Zealand, and that sense of place runs through almost everything she writes. Her novels are packed with coastal towns, mountain stations, busy hospitals, and communities where everybody seems to know everybody else's business. Even when the stories travel, they still carry a strong Kiwi heartbeat.
Before fiction took over, she worked in health care, including critical care nursing, nurse education, counselling, supervision, coaching, and family planning education. That background matters. Her characters tend to have real jobs, real pressures, and real bodies, and the emotional fallout in her books usually feels grounded rather than glossy.
She did not arrive at romance by a straight line.
In her twenties and thirties, she had some poetry published and spent years trying to write other kinds of fiction, including thrillers and fantasy. Then she started reading romance, discovered mm romance, and something clicked. She has said that writing about relationships made sense once she found the right genre, which fits with the way her books put emotional connection at the centre even when suspense, sport, grief, or family drama are swirling around it.
Her debut novel, First Impressions, opened the Auckland Med world and introduced the mix of warmth, tension, humour, and romantic suspense that would become familiar to her readers. From there came books like Digging Deep, Off Balance, Unguarded, and Foxed, each one a little different in shape and tone but all interested in people trying to trust, heal, and make a life that actually fits.
New Zealand stays at the centre of the map.
That is especially clear in series like Painted Bay, Southern Lights, and Mackenzie Country. Hogan likes places where work matters, whether that means mussel farms, vineyards, sheep stations, emergency rooms, or fashion houses. Readers often come for the chemistry, but they tend to stay for the feeling that the setting counts too. The land, weather, local rhythms, and social ties are never just wallpaper.
A few books have also picked up major attention. Digging Deep was a Lambda Literary Award finalist in 2020, Off Balance won the 2021 New Zealand Romance Book of the Year, and The Art of Husbandry was a Lambda finalist in 2024. More recently, the Fisher & Church trilogy shows another side of her range, older leads, an ongoing romantic suspense arc, and a relationship that has to be built under pressure rather than dropped neatly into place.
Across the bibliography, certain threads keep returning: found family, second chances, grief, recovery, awkward desire, and people who are braver than they think. She writes men who can be prickly, funny, stubborn, lonely, and deeply caring, sometimes all in the same chapter. Even at their messiest, they are usually worth rooting for.
These days she is mostly settled in New Zealand. She has travelled widely, lived in a number of countries, and still writes with a strongly local lens, helped along by a Maine Coon cat, a Cocker Spaniel, and a long-running instinct for stories where love has to be earned.
