Nick and Mads are not young men falling fast. They are older, wary, bruised in different ways, and trying to work out whether love is worth the risk a second time, or maybe for the first time in the truest sense.

The suspense side matters too. The books are tied together by investigation, secrets, and ongoing fallout, so each romance beat lands against a background of genuine pressure. At the same time, the series stays deeply character-led. Hogan is more interested in how danger changes a relationship than in flashy plot mechanics for their own sake. The emotional stakes stay front and centre.

If you want a Jay Hogan series with more continuity, more older characters, and more time spent inside one relationship, Fisher & Church is a strong choice. The books do not end on cheap cliffhangers, but they definitely build on one another. Start with The Meaning Of You and let the whole arc unfold properly. That is where the real payoff is.
