Where should I start?
For the core military sci-fi arc: Legionnaire → Galactic Outlaws → Kill Team → Attack of Shadows.
For Galaxy's Edge side stories: Requiem for Medusa → Chasing the Dragon → Order of the Centurion → Iron Wolves.
For modern soldiers in fantasy: Forgotten Ruin → Hit & Fade → Violence of Action → Lay the Hate.
For action-heavy sci-fi with J.N. Chaney: Wayward Galaxy → Wayward Galaxy 2 → Wayward Galaxy 3.
For lighter paranormal detective work: 'til Death → Second Impressions → The Man Who Balked.
Author bio
Jason Anspach was born in 1979 and built his name by leaning hard into the kinds of stories he clearly loves: military science fiction, space opera, pulp detective comedy, and soldiers dropped into impossible places with bad odds and worse bosses. His public bios keep the personal details simple, but they do give a clear picture of a writer with one foot in family life and the other in big, noisy imagined wars.
The home front matters. Anspach lives in Puyallup, Washington, with his wife, their seven children, and a border collie named Charlotte. That detail shows up often because it is hard not to notice. It also fits the energy in many of his books: serious stakes, a crowded cast, and a streak of dry humor running through the chaos.
His first novel was 'til Death, published in 2015. It introduced Sam Rockwell, a 1950s private investigator who handles cases for ghosts called Returns. The setup is odd in the best way, a hard-boiled detective throwback where Cold War danger, old movie banter, and paranormal trouble all share the same cramped office.
Then Galaxy's Edge changed the scale.
Created with Nick Cole, the series began with Legionnaire in 2017 and grew into a large military sci-fi universe. The books follow legionnaires, smugglers, bounty hunters, war heroes, spies, rebels, and politicians as the Republic slides toward chaos. Readers tend to come for the firefights and stay for the feeling that the galaxy is bigger than any one squad, ship, or war.
Anspach kept building outward. With Cole and Walt Robillard, Forgotten Ruin sends modern U.S. Army Rangers into a fantasy world full of orcs, trolls, dark magic, and old-school evil that did not expect modern weapons and tactics. With J.N. Chaney, Wayward Galaxy mixes Army Rangers, colony ships, a very strange AI, and a war that follows humanity across the stars. Able Bodied Soldier, also with Chaney, brings powered combat suits into a story about injury, second chances, and what it means to stay in the fight.
A lot of his work circles the same sturdy ideas: duty, loyalty, found family, hard choices, faith in the person next to you, and the messy comedy that shows up when people are under pressure. His settings can be far-future battlefields, ruined fantasy worlds, neon game realms, or 1950s San Francisco. The common thread is a practical hero trying to do the job.
He does not seem interested in quiet rooms.
His path also shows how modern genre publishing can work when writers build shared worlds with readers in mind. He often writes with coauthors, lets side stories branch into their own lanes, and treats a series page less like a shelf and more like a map.
Today Anspach remains closely tied to the WarGate and Galaxy's Edge worlds, writing and publishing across several connected and standalone series. His bibliography is large, fast-moving, and collaboration-heavy, which is part of the appeal. There is usually another mission, another squad, another bad situation, and another book waiting around the corner.
