Author bio

Jane Haddam was the pen name of Orania Papazoglou, a mystery writer whose novels often paired knotty crimes with close communities, family histories, religious institutions, and people who had more to hide than they first admitted. She was born on July 13, 1951, in Bethel, Connecticut, and spent much of her life in Connecticut.

Before fiction became her main work, Papazoglou taught at the college level and worked as a magazine editor. Those jobs gave her a close look at workplaces, deadlines, professional rivalries, and the odd social rules that shape a group. Those details later became useful raw material for her mysteries.

Her route into publishing began with a rejection. In 1981, while covering a romance-writers convention as a journalist, she had an article turned down. Instead of leaving it there, she began writing a mystery of her own.

That book was Sweet, Savage Death, published in 1984 under her own name. It introduced Patience McKenna, a tall, sharp-tongued romance writer and journalist who keeps getting pulled into murder cases around New York's publishing world. The series takes a lively look at writers, editors, agents, conventions, and the strange business of selling romantic stories.

Papazoglou wrote five Patience McKenna novels, including Wicked, Loving Murder, Death's Savage Passion, and Once and Always Murder. The books were later republished under the Jane Haddam name. She also wrote suspense novels as Orania Papazoglou, including Sanctity and Charisma, and published romances under the names Nicola Andrews and Ann Paris.

In 1990, she introduced the character most closely associated with the Haddam name: Gregor Demarkian. Not a Creature Was Stirring begins with Gregor, a retired FBI behavioral-science specialist, returning to his Armenian-American Philadelphia neighborhood after his wife's death. A Christmas invitation to a rich family's estate soon becomes a murder investigation.

Gregor stayed with her for thirty novels. In books such as Precious Blood, Skeleton Key, The Headmaster's Wife, Flowering Judas, and One of Our Own, he investigates crimes shaped by money, status, old resentments, faith, politics, and the pressure of living in a tight-knit place. Readers tend to come for Gregor's patient reasoning, then stay for Bennis Hannaford, Father Tibor Kasparian, and the busy life of Cavanaugh Street.

Her early Gregor books often use holidays as a setting, but they are not simply holiday mysteries. Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and other occasions give people a reason to gather, which gives secrets and rivalries room to surface.

Papazoglou was married to fellow mystery writer William L. DeAndrea until his death in 1996. They had two sons, Matthew and Gregory. She died on July 17, 2019, but her final Gregor Demarkian novel, One of Our Own, was published in 2020.
