Author bio
Jane Fallon is an English novelist and former television producer whose books dig into the messier side of modern relationships. She’s best known for sharply funny, slightly dark stories where affairs, friendships and family secrets collide, from Getting Rid of Matthew and Got You Back to Faking Friends, Queen Bee and Over Sharing.
She was born in 1960 in Harrow in north‑west London, the youngest of five children. When her parents moved the family to Buckinghamshire to run a newsagent’s shop, she grew up in a crowded flat above the store and escaped into books and the stories she wrote herself. At St Bernard’s Convent School in Slough and later at University College London, where she studied history, she kept writing for student magazines and the university paper.
After graduating she joined a small theatrical literary agency, reading and assessing scripts. Freelance work as a script reader and editor led her into television, and in 1994 she became a producer on the long‑running soap EastEnders. Over the following decade she worked on several distinctive drama and comedy series, including This Life, Teachers and 20 Things to Do Before You’re 30, learning how to shape character, pace and dialogue for a mainstream audience.
All the while she was drafting novels in her spare time without quite finishing them.
In her mid‑forties she finally stepped away from television to give writing her full attention. The result was Getting Rid of Matthew, published in 2007, a reversal of the classic love story in which a mistress discovers that having the man full‑time is far less appealing than she’d imagined. The book became a bestseller and a popular book‑club pick, and opened the door to a new career.
Fallon followed her debut with Got You Back, Foursome, The Ugly Sister and Skeletons. Each novel tackles betrayal and loyalty in a slightly different way: long‑standing affairs and double lives, old university friendships under strain, sisters divided by fame and envy, and in‑laws hiding dangerous secrets. Her protagonists are usually smart, capable women who have put up with bad behaviour for too long and are finally ready to push back.
Later books such as My Sweet Revenge, Faking Friends, Strictly Between Us and Tell Me a Secret pushed her towards what she has jokingly called chick noir – classic women’s‑fiction set‑ups with a darker, spikier twist. More recent novels including Queen Bee, Worst Idea Ever, Just Got Real and Over Sharing pick up the pressures of social media, online dating and influencer culture, while still focusing on everyday betrayals between friends, colleagues and neighbours.
Her work has been shortlisted for prizes such as the Melissa Nathan Award for Romantic Comedy Fiction and major popular‑fiction awards, and in 2020 she received an honorary fellowship from University College London. Got You Back has been adapted into a stage musical and Getting Rid of Matthew is in development for the screen, reflecting how cleanly her stories translate to drama. Fallon lives in London with comedian Ricky Gervais, her partner since their student days.
Readers come to her novels for the revenge plots and twists, but stay for the recognisable characters, dry humour and the sense that even the messiest situations can lead to a new start.
