Author bio
Jana DeLeon grew up in southwest Louisiana, in a tiny community called Carlyss that she likes to say you will not find on a map. Her childhood was framed by bayous, shrimp boats, thunderstorms rolling in from the Gulf and the low hiss of cicadas at night.
Her family owned a simple camp on a bayou off the Gulf of Mexico that you could only reach by boat. The heart of that place was a rope hammock strung across a wide deck over the water. Jana spent countless afternoons there with a book, rocking above the slow current while egrets and herons stalked along the banks.
When she was not reading, she and her brother were usually out in a flat bottom aluminum boat, nosing through narrow channels and marsh grass. They watched nutria slip into the water, learned to spot an alligator before it surfaced and came home muddy and sunburned. Those quiet hours on the water fixed the sounds and smells of the bayou so firmly in her mind that they show up in almost everything she writes.
As an adult, Jana’s first career looked very different. She worked in business and eventually became a chief financial officer. It was challenging work, full of budgets, spreadsheets and long meetings. The job sharpened her eye for detail and her sense of how organizations really function behind closed doors, skills that later slipped neatly into her crime fiction.
The urge to write her own stories never really went away, and in 2001 she finally gave it serious attention. After years of drafting at night and on weekends, she sold her first novel, Rumble on the Bayou, a romantic mystery about a small town deputy, a DEA agent and a stoned alligator in someone’s swimming pool. The book let her take everything she knew about small southern towns and wrap it in comedy, danger and a little heat.
From there, Jana leaned hard into the settings she loved best. The Ghost In Law books drop readers into Mudbug, Louisiana, where scientist Maryse Robicheaux is saddled with the opinionated ghost of her late mother in law. The series mixes murder, romance and a very mouthy spirit, and it showed Jana how much fun it could be to balance genuine stakes with slapstick, gossip and family drama.
Her Miss Fortune Mystery series pushed that blend even further. CIA assassin Fortune Redding has to hide out in Sinful, Louisiana, posing as a former beauty queen turned librarian. There she falls in with Ida Belle and Gertie, two retired operatives who know their way around weapons, sweet tea and small town politics. Readers come for the mysteries, but they tend to stay for the friendship, the Geritol Mafia and the sense that danger can arrive wrapped in a casserole.
Not all of Jana’s books are lighthearted. The Shaye Archer novels move to New Orleans and into much darker territory. Shaye, an amnesiac private investigator who was found beaten and without a past, takes on cases involving stalkers, missing kids and buried trauma. Titles like Malevolent, Sinister and Diabolical keep the focus on psychology and suspense while still threading in the resilience and found family that run through her work.
She has also written a string of romantic suspense stories for series like Mystere Parish, where law enforcement heroes and determined heroines face kidnappings, haunted hotels, voodoo legends and long held secrets in the Louisiana swamps. Standalone Gothics such as The Secret of Cypriere Bayou and Bayou Bodyguard return to crumbling mansions, hidden passageways and storms that always seem to hit at the worst moment.
More recently, Jana has played with new stages of life and new coasts. In Wrong Side of Forty, a midlife heroine discovers that catching her husband cheating is only the start of a much stranger journey that may involve goddesses and saving the world. The Tempest Island books move to a Florida barrier island, where women rebuilding their lives find second chances, stubborn secrets and, of course, trouble.
Today Jana lives in Texas, a comfortable drive from the state she writes about so often. She shares her home with her husband and what she happily calls the most spoiled Sheltie in the world. She has yet to stumble across a real dead body or an actual ghost, but she keeps looking. Until then, she is more than content to fill the bayous on the page with quirky neighbors, old grudges, unexpected courage and the occasional alligator.
