Series background & context
Happily Everlasting is a shared world series set in Everlasting, Maine, a fishing town where magic, curses and eccentric residents are part of the local weather report. Several authors contribute stories to the broader series. Jana DeLeon’s entry, Dead Man Talking, brings her love of small towns and paranormal twists to the rocky New England coast.
The book centers on meteorologist Zoe Parker, who fled Everlasting as soon as she finished college. She has a good career and a carefully managed life, and she is not eager to revisit the place where she grew up under the shadow of odd rumors and old pains. That resolve crumbles when her great aunt Sapphire takes a bad fall down the stairs of her lighthouse home.
Zoe returns to Everlasting planning a short visit to help her aunt recover and get back into the lighthouse. Instead, she runs headlong into strange weather patterns, old legends and the realization that Sapphire’s fall was not an accident. Someone has been sneaking around the lighthouse, looking for something Sapphire does not even realize she has.
Dane Stanton, Zoe’s former flame, has never really left town. He carries his own mix of affection and frustration toward Everlasting, and Zoe’s return stirs up both unfinished business between them and real concern about the dangers surrounding Sapphire. Working together to figure out who is targeting the lighthouse means reopening old wounds and deciding whether they can trust each other now in ways they did not before.
The paranormal elements in Dead Man Talking are threaded through gently. There are whispers of ghosts, hints that weather can respond to more than cold fronts and warm air, and ten cats that seem to know more than they should. The tone is cozy rather than frightening, with an emphasis on community, second chances and the idea that a strange town can still be home.
Readers do not need to have read the rest of the Happily Everlasting books to enjoy DeLeon’s story, but if you like her mix of mystery, romance and the supernatural, Everlasting offers plenty more to explore. Expect quirky neighbors, a sense that fate likes to meddle and a setting where happily ever after might involve solving a crime and accepting that your aunt’s ghost stories were not entirely made up.
